Job summary

We are looking to appoint a part time Locum Consultant Physician in Palliative Medicine to cover a one-year maternity leave gap in service. The consultants frontline duties will include inpatient work sharing clinical responsibilities for the 15 Inpatient Unit beds. This will include taking a lead at the weekly inpatient MDT meetings and providing a once weekly specialist palliative Care clinic for new or follow-up patients. The role will provide a senior cross-cover with other elements of Ashgates consultant medical services to cover sickness and absence. At times this will require the individual to support the community services including the virtual ward, domiciliary community visits, providing advisory role and supervision for the wider Ashgate Hospice community specialist teams. Main duties of the job

As part of your main duties, the Locum Consultant will share clinical responsibilities within the inpatient unit, ensuring the highest standards of care in addition to conducting weekly specialist palliative care clinic for new and follow-up patients. The postholder will lead weekly inpatient multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, fostering collaboration and comprehensive care planning and provide senior cross-cover support across Ashgates consultant medical services, ensuring continuity of care during staff sickness and absence. The postholder will occasionally support community services, including the virtual ward and home visits, offering expert advice and supervision to Ashgate Hospice's community specialist teams in addition to offering advisory support to multi-professional generalists and specialist clinicians within our established medical team. Job responsibilities

In conjunction with other members of the multi-disciplinary team, you will provide a comprehensive clinical service and share clinical responsibility for cases with team members. You will ensure service delivery across the wider team, empowering and assisting others to deliver optimum services whilst maintaining accurate and timely clinical record keeping. The Consultant post also plays an active part in the training and clinical supervision of medical staff in junior and non-training grades and the development of support staff, supporting and leading the delivery of education for trainee medical staff and medical students. You will also be expected to participate effectively in Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance, engage with requirements for Continuing Professional Development in accordance with guidelines set down by the Royal College of Physicians and fulfil the requirements for revalidation with support from the Trust. As part of leadership, management and service development, you will evaluate and monitor clinical practice, incorporating evidence-based principles and suitable outcome measures. You will engage with Ashgate Senior Leadership Team planning processes and wider service development as required and work collaboratively with the hospice Senior Leadership Team to take an active role in the management of the service. Working with colleagues, you will play a active part in developing and implementing new ways of working in line with modernisation principles that are fit for the future. To ensure the maximum efficiency of palliative care services, you will continuously review the best use of departmental staffing and other resources.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MRCP/FRCP (UK) or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise and entry on GMC Specialist Register in Palliative Medicine.
  • If not on the specialist Register, to have clear evidence of experience and ability to take on clinical responsibilities at a Specialist Palliative Medicine consultant level.

Desirable

  • Specialist interest or additional qualifications in other areas of specialty.
  • Full participation in CPD/appraisal/revalidation processes.
  • Sound knowledge of NHS and Local Authority structures and systems.
  • Knowledge of research processes.

Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrated experience working effectively within a multidisciplinary team in a specialist palliative care unit.
  • Proficiency in conducting palliative care assessments across various settings, including inpatient units, hospital wards, outpatient clinics, and patients' homes.
  • Capability to provide expert palliative care advice and support to other healthcare professionals in both hospital and community settings.

Desirable

  • Experience of managing a caseload of patients in a Specialist Palliative Care Unit.
  • Experience covering a Palliative Medicine on call rota at consultant level.
