Speech and Language Therapist Development Post Band 5-6

We have an opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated Speech and Language Therapist for a Band 5 - 6 development role within our Special Schools Team, Luton- Redgrave Children and Young People's Centre

The Luton and Bedfordshire Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy Service has a vacancy for a Speech and Language Therapist in our Luton Locality, working in special schools.

This is a development post and suitable for Newly Qualified Therapists interested in complex needs or from those due to qualify in the near future.

Newly qualified therapists will be supported at Band 5 level and following completion of a competency framework, they will be transferred to a band 6 role without the need for additional recruitment. We also welcome applications from more experienced therapists and applications from SLTs already working at Band 6 level.

The post holder will work as part of a team to support children and young people with speech, language and communication difficulties associated with complex needs.

They will independently manage and have day-to-day responsibility for a caseload of children and young people, as part of the Special Needs Team, Special Schools caseloads. They will provide training to enable parents and other professionals to support children's language and communication needs.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will devise strategies for complex case management, with support as needed, and signpost children and their families to appropriate clinical pathways both within and outside of the SLT service. Candidates should be skilled in working compassionately and effectively with families.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate an ability to work flexibly and demonstrate initiative and confidence around clinical decision making. Candidates will have excellent communication skills and be experienced in multidisciplinary working.

There is an opportunity for the successful candidate to complete training, and receive in-service support, to achieve their Dysphagia competencies.

Job responsibilities

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. To manage and prioritise a defined caseload and work with an appropriate degree of autonomy and independence, with regular support/supervision, with children on the special schools caseload.
  2. To deliver training to enhance the skills of the wider workforce around speech, language, and communication.
  3. To identify, assess and diagnose communication impairments and select appropriate patients and type of therapy for effective treatment.
  4. To assess, develop and implement speech and language therapy treatment and discharge as appropriate. To make a differential diagnosis on the basis of evidence from assessment, and design appropriate treatment based on analysis of profile of need seeking advice as appropriate.
  5. To develop clinical skills and professional knowledge through experience, training, and supervision.
  6. To take part in the supervision of students with support.
  7. To take part in supervision of the work of SLT Assistants and volunteers when required.

Communication

  1. To attend and report to case conferences/review meetings etc. for patients on the caseload with support as requested for situations where conflict management/negotiation may be required.
  2. To develop clear care plans based on best practice.
  3. To provide advice including written reports to others regarding the management and care of patients with communication difficulties.
  4. To present and communicate complex clinical information in such a manner as to motivate and inform patients, carers, families, and members of the multi-disciplinary team/other professions, agreeing decision- making relevant to patient management.
  5. To work collaboratively and liaise over clinical matters with a wide range of professions across a variety of locations and agencies, with support as appropriate.
  6. To establish and maintain positive interpersonal relationships with other staff which are characterised by open communication, trust and respect.
  7. To maintain sensitivity at all times to the emotional needs of children and their carers, in particular when imparting potentially distressing information regarding the nature and implications of their difficulties.
  8. To form productive relationships with others who may be under stress and/or have challenging communication difficulties.
  9. To attend and contribute as appropriate to Locality Meetings, Clinical Forums and Paediatric service meetings and other professional and / or relevant meetings.

Budgetary Responsibility

1. To monitor stock levels in own service area and request new equipment as appropriate2. Does not hold budgetary responsibility but is aware of the need to plan non-pay expenditure.

People Management

  1. Maintaining own professional development and requirement to take part in appraisal and KSF process.
  2. To identify personal/professional development evidenced by Personal Development Plan/ Professional Portfolio.
  3. To attend relevant training (courses, meetings, CENs) and development in order to maintain and develop skills and knowledge required of a therapist working in this field.
  4. To keep up to date with new techniques and developments for the promotion and maintenance of good speech & language therapy practice in paediatrics and maintain up to date HCPC and RCSLT registration.
  5. To actively participate in reflective clinical supervision with peers / clinical supervisor in order to develop and enhance practice.

Research & Development Activity

  1. To undertake Clinical Governance /audit projects within local service.
  2. To participate in departmental research and clinical governance/audit projects.
  3. To collect and provide research data as required.
  4. To demonstrate clinical effectiveness by use of evidence-based practice and outcome measures.

Clinical and Practice Governance

  1. Observe and maintain strict confidentiality with regards to any patient/family/staff/records and information in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act.
  2. To manage and prioritise a defined caseload and work with an appropriate degree of autonomy and independence
  3. Any data that is taken/shared as part of a phone call or transported or transferred electronically must be undertaken with regard to the Trust Information Governance and Information Security policies.
  4. To share information with others, observing data protection guidelines.
  5. The post holder must adhere to the Trust risk assessment and risk management processes.
  6. The post holder must adhere to infection control policies and procedures.
  7. It is a condition of your employment that you are currently registered with HCPC and RCSLT and it is your responsibility to maintain your professional registration.

  10. Participate in clinical supervision on a regular basis.

  17. To participate in the implementation of service/Trust Clinical Governance Plan.

Additional Information

  1. The post can involves working with small children frequent requirement for sitting on child size chairs or on the floor in a restricted position.

  6. To demonstrate standard keyboard skills and use IT effectively to extend and complete programmes and activities.
  7. To have the ability to travel by car throughout Luton and / or Bedfordshire when required, including a full driving licence and access to own transport (unless you have a disability as defined by the Equality Act 2010).

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Recognised S< Degree or equivalent Health Professions Council Licence to Practice Registered member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists

Desirable

  • Membership of relevant Clinical Excellence Network (CEN)

Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge of a range of paediatric clinical disorders, assessments and appropriate therapeutic interventions.
  • Relevant experience of assessment and intervention in children.

Desirable

  • Knowledge and understanding of the philosophy and set up of special schools
  • Evidence of working in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Additional qualifications in AAC and dysphagia

Skills

Essential

  • Able to communicate effectively with patients with communication problems where difficulties in understanding exist, using observation, listening and empathy
  • Able to convey complex information clearly to patients, carers and other professionals both in verbal and written form
  • Knowledge of the principles of clinical governance/audit
