Job summary

Trauma

To provide high quality trauma and emergency anaesthesia within a one-to-one consultant supervised environment initially, and then go on to manage cases within the major trauma centre with indirect supervision.

To gain specialist trauma anaesthetic experience within the orthopaedic trauma theatres which includes major pelvic and spinal work, cases expedited to the major trauma theatre including emergency neurosurgery cases and unstable penetrating trauma, cases that proceed to interventional radiology, as well as in the Emergency Department as a key part of the trauma team.

To provide regional analgesia and anaesthesia for patients with injuries to different body systems, under the supervision and training of consultants within the department.

To communicate with and participate in anaesthetic services for high dependency and critical care specialities, including AICU and PICU.

Clinical experience

ICHCT is shifting focus and practice to ambulatory surgery. It is a unique setup, where surgical procedures are done on a day surgery basis. The surgical services provide comprehensive care specializing in ambulatory surgery in the areas of:

General surgery

Oncology (specialising in cancers including breast, head and neck and thyroid cancer)

Plastic surgery

Urology surgery

ENT surgery

Orthopaedic surgery

TRAUMA

Anaesthesia services are provided in multiple locations at St Marys hospital. The primary clinical area is the 4th floor theatre suite, where most emergency work is located. Other locations include the day surgery theatres, as well as the surgical innovation centre in the Patterson building.

In addition to this varied workload, there is a standby Code Red / Major haemorrhage trauma theatre staffed and prepared ready to go 24/7 as well as additional workload in the emergency department itself, with anaesthetists providing anaesthesia input to every trauma call, as well as to cases in Interventional radiology, and to those cases requiring regional block for acute injury, such as thoracic epidural for rib fractures.

REGIONAL;

Regional Anaesthesia services are expanding significantly to facilitate the performance of several surgeries on a day surgical basis. It is equipped with ultrasound machines and taught by experts and fellowship trained regional anaesthetists. A variety of blocks are performed that caters to ambulatory practice.

Fellows will learn the clinical skills, principles, practices, and patient care in ambulatory & regional anaesthesia. Fellows will also be exposed to the organisational aspects of running an ambulatory and trauma service, pre-anaesthesia clinics, postoperative follow up of day surgical patients. On call commitments will be at St Mary's in accordance with the respective placement.

The posts will be available as a full time (described below) or part time post. Job plan of a part-time post will be by agreement with the Supervisor of the Post.

The post holder will undertake regular regional or trauma anaesthesia days and the post holder will also attend acute pain rounds. The post holder will take part in the senior registrar on call rota alongside the other clinical fellows and ST 6-7s. Currently this rota is 1:8.

The post will be covered by the same arrangements for study leave and supervision that apply to trainees in HEE approved posts. Study leave and annual leave will have to be taken during weeks when not on call, or sessions moved accordingly. There is a strong departmental tradition of performing research and audit in this service and of publishing results. Previous experience of research and completed audit will be expected.

Education/ Qualifications

Essential

  • On GMC's register with a Licence to Practice or eligible to apply for GMC registration and a Licence to Practice
  • On GMC's Specialist Register or within 24 months of being admitted to the register by the date of the interviews or eligible for specialist registration
  • FRCA or equivalent
  • ATLS / ETC or equivalent
  • Evidence of experience in critical care

Desirable

  • APLS or paediatric critical care experience
  • MD, PhD

Clinical Expertise in Specialty/Sub Specialty

Essential

  • IT Skills and computer literacy
  • Experience of treating patients after injury

Desirable

  • Previous work in a major trauma centre

Leadership/ Management Skills

Essential

  • Able to take responsibility, show leadership, make decisions, exert appropriate authority
  • Ability to lead the education of other medical professionals
  • Ability to work across specialties and be collaborative

Teaching and training

Essential

  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates/postgraduates and junior medical staff

Desirable

  • Have set up or lead a teaching programme

Audit

Essential

  • Understanding of principles of clinical audit
  • Experience of clinical audit and quality improvement

Desirable

  • Have presented quality improvement work or audit at a conference

Academic Achievements including Research/Publications

  • Peer reviewed publication/s in anaesthesia, intensive care or emergency medicine

Language

  • Able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements
