Job summary

The post holder will work for the Perioperative medicine for Older People undergoing Surgery (POPS) team within the Department of Ageing and Health. POPS is an innovative and award winning service delivering Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment and optimisation (CGA) based care to older people undergoing elective and emergency surgery. The service operates from Darent Valley Hospital, covering General Surgery elective and emergency patients and emergency and elective Vascular patients which then are operated on at Guy's and St Thomas' hospital. There will be the opportunity to attend and present patients at the POPS multidisciplinary meetings at Guys and St Thomas' Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be involved in the delivery of preoperative CGA and optimisation, shared decision making and postoperative management of inpatients on surgical wards. The fellow will participate in outpatient clinics, ward rounds, board rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings. There is no formal on call commitment, however the option of general medical acute on call could be discussed

Job responsibilities

The applicant may have a background in geriatric medicine, acute/general medicine or anaesthetics/intensive care. Specifically the applicant does not need to have a NTN.

The successful applicant will work within the POPS team which consists of a Consultant, Specialist Nurses, FY1, Occupational Therapist and administrator. The post holder will be supervised by the POPS Consultant.

The post holder will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the provision of POPS services to Dartford and Gravesham Trust to include:

(a) Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the trust in such hospitals, health centres or clinics or other premises as required.

(b) Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff.

  • Full GMC Registration and hold a licence to practise MRCP

  • Comprehensive clinical experience in geriatrics/general internal medicine or in Perioperative Medicine

Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team
