Job summary

We are currently seeking to appoint a LAS ST3+ Doctor to work within our Cardiothoracic Department due to a vacancy on the NHS England training programme. The appointment is to commence as soon as possible for a fixed term period of 12 months. Registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is essential. The post does not award a National Training Number. As this post is not recognised as a 'training post', full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required, and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required. The duties of this post are equivalent to ST3+.

Main duties of the job

These post sit within the Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery Directorate.

Cardiac Services are managed by the Cardiac Directorate Team, which is part of the South Yorkshire Regional Services Grouping. Tertiary Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery Services for the North Trent population of 1.8 million are located within the South Yorkshire Cardiothoracic Centre, Chesterman Wing, Northern General Hospital.. The Cardiologists at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals work closely with colleagues in the referring District General Hospitals (Barnsley District Hospital, Chesterfield and North Derbyshire District Hospital, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals, Rotherham District Hospital) in a well established North Trent Network of Cardiac Care.

Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery services have been housed within the purpose built Chesterman Wing at the Northern General Hospital since April 1997. The facilities consist of:

  • 4 dedicated operating theatres
  • 18 bedded Cardiac Intensive Care and Extended Theatre Recovery Unit
  • 54 Cardiothoracic Surgery Beds (including 6 HDU beds)
  • Dedicated Outpatient Department
  • Dedicated Admission and Pre Admission Lounge

The clinical director for Cardio-thoracic service is Professor Nigel Wheeldon, Consultant Cardiologist and Honorary Professor of Inherited Cardiac Conditions

Job description

Job responsibilities

The successful candidates have the opportunity to extend their experience in cardio-thoracic surgery, with the possibility to develop a sub-specialty interest in thoracic, mitral or aortic surgery.

They will be involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, be involved in operating sessions, wards, ITU, OPD, MDT and research projects. The candidate will take part to the resident on-call rota for cardio-thoracic.

The appointee will spend 12 months at the Trust in order to undertake Cardiothoracic Surgery and research work. There is flexibility in this arrangement in order meet the educational requirements of the Fellow.

The Fellow will also participate in outpatient clinics and thoracic MDTs where she/he will have the opportunity to engage with the multi-disciplinary teams of different hospitals.

They will be expected to work alongside the Cardiothoracic on-call team in order to develop knowledge and skills in managing perioperative patients and to lead ward rounds after settling with the team.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered (or eligible to be registered) with the GMC with a licence to practise
  • Basic Medical Degree
  • MRCS (or equivalent)

Research

Essential

  • Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate/Basic understanding of research methods and statistics

Desirable

  • Publications in Peer reviewed journals.

Clinical experience

Essential

  • Successful completion of Core Surgical training programme (or equivalent) or work as a fixed term specialty trainee in Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • Experience as first assistant for cardio and thoracic procedures

Desirable

  • Experience as first operator for cardio-thoracic procedures
  • 3 year's work in Cardiothoracic Surgery

Teaching and training

Essential

  • Experience of teaching medical students and junior doctors

Continuous Professional Development

Essential

  • Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months

Desirable

  • Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio

Clinical governance and audit

Desirable

  • Documented completed audits during training

Personal attributes

Essential

  • Demonstrates behaviour consistent with PROUD values (see appendix)
  • Good written communication skills
  • The applicant must demonstrate skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking the English language that enables effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues as set out in the GMC' good medical practice (2013).
