Job summary

East Cheshire NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine, with a specialist interest in pleural disease and virtual ward.

The consultants in respiratory medicine are based on the Respiratory ward (11) which comprises 24 beds, including 8 single rooms and 2 negative pressure rooms.

During the last three years the Trust has undergone a programme of change to strengthen its senior clinical leadership and management. As part of this restructuring, the consultants in Respiratory Medicine have taken on senior leadership and educational roles. Dr M Babores is the Deputy Medical Director (Acute and Integrated Community Care Services) and Dr Gallagher the Faster Diagnostic Cancer Lead for medicine.

Hours per week: 10 PAs

Main duties of the job

The post holder will contribute to the management of all the patients in the Respiratory Ward and help provide a respiratory in reach service. It will be expected that the post holder will be heavily involved in the management of inpatients with at least twice weekly ward rounds and further visits to the ward during the week to facilitate discharges and help with management of acutely unwell patients.

They will undertake a weekly procedures list, including bronchoscopy and EBUS and help with pleural procedures such as Medical Thoracoscopy.

They will attend weekly video-conference lung cancer MDT with South Manchester University Teaching Hospital and local radiology meeting fortnightly. The appointee will have an important role in the training of junior medical staff in the assessment and management of the acutely ill medical patients as well contributing to MRCP PACES teaching and postgraduate medical training of foundation year doctors and speciality trainees.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) or
  • CESR
  • European Community Rights
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Full registration with General Medicine Council (GMC) with license to practice.

Desirable

  • Advanced life support.

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCST in general (internal) medicine
  • Broad range of recent experience in respiratory and general (internal) medicine
  • Expertise in relevant practical procedures eg insertion of intercostal drains (under u/s guidance)
  • Fully trained in bronchoscopy and EBUS
  • Level 1 thoracic u/s
  • Evidence of ability to change clinical practice and service provision
  • Up to date practice in line with recent initiatives

Desirable

  • Experience in medical thoracoscopy

Management and Administrative Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of developing and delivering change

Desirable

  • Ability to engage and communicate the benefits of organisational change to stake holders
