This is a fantastic opportunity to join a well established community mental health team in an CQC rated Outstanding Trust.

The post is within well-developed multidisciplinary teams working in the vibrant borough of Tower Hamlets. There are opportunities to work flexibly and good support from a collegiate consultant body within the Directorate.

Bow and Poplar Neighbourhood Mental Health Service (NMHT) is an integrated multidisciplinary service. The service is based around Primary Care Networks and the post-holder will join the current substantive consultant to provide clinical leadership to the team. The team is based at a community clinic which also houses the Bethnal Green NMHT, the Tower Hamlets Early Intervention Service, Early Detection Service and a Specialist Autism Assessment. The inpatient facilities are based at the Tower Hamlets Centre for Mental Health at Mile End Hospital. The service base is very central to the borough with good bus and Tube connections.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will assume full consultant responsibilities for their proportion of patients under the care of the NMHT. They will provide clinical leadership to that part of the service and is expected to engage in the management and development of the service. They will act as Responsible Clinician when appropriate for patients of the service who are liable to detention or subject to Community Treatment Orders (for the purpose of the Mental Health Act). The post holder will work alongside Consultant colleagues and the NMHT Operational Manager to develop a shared ethos and understanding for the roles within the team and clarity around clinical pathways of care, as part of the consultant's clinical leadership role.

The Neighbourhood Mental Health Team is currently aligned around two Primary Care Networks proving the functions of primary care liaison, assessment, brief treatment and recovery-focused mental health care. We are pioneering new models of delivery of community care including greater partnership working with primary care and voluntary sector organisations as well increased integration to include physical health community care.

Patients of Bow and Poplar NMHT requiring inpatient treatment are admitted to Globe Ward (male) and Bricklane Ward (female), Tower Hamlets Mental Health Unit, at the Mile End Hospital site. These are 19 bed single sex wards, shared with another NMHT, Bethnal Green. There are close links between the community and ward based teams. The wards clinical governance is enhanced by an Associate Clinical Director who has responsibility for the Inpatient Unit.

The post holder will have regular contact with the GP practices in their patch offering advice and liaison and will need to maintain strong relationships with partner agencies and primary care colleagues to facilitate a responsive service that can see patients quickly, but also discharge back to primary care.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Medical degree, MBBS or equivalent
  • Fully registered with the General Medical Council
  • Eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register (or Specialist Registrar within 6 months of gaining CCT).
  • Membership of the Royal College Of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with RCPsych Guidelines)
  • With or eligible for Approved Clinician status (MHA, 2007)

Desirable

  • Higher Degree in relevant area

Knowledge

Essential

  • Experience of clinical work in General Adult Psychiatrist at ST4-6 or Consultant level in the last three years
  • Experience and knowledge of psychopharmacology.
  • Experience of working in adult psychiatry services in the community
  • Excellent working knowledge and experience of the application of the Mental Health Act
  • Understanding of the social aspects relevant to psychiatry

Desirable

  • Knowledge & experience of recovery-informed service delivery and working with patients as experts by experience

Clinical Skills

Essential

  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team and provide leadership to the team
  • Expertise in risk assessment and the use of evidence based interventions for the treatment of psychosis, mood disorders and co-morbidities
  • Expertise in the use of evidence based interventions for the treatment of psychosis, mood disorders and other mental health illnesses
  • Commitment to clinical governance
