Job summary

The Trainee Nurse specialist and Sonographer will be involved in the delivery of Early Pregnancy ultrasound imaging services within the Gynaecology Division.

The Post Holder will work under clinical supervision of the Nurse specialist Sonographers in delivering all aspects of Early Pregnancy ultrasound procedures whilst undertaking academic training at University.

This is a Trainee post and once qualified, subject to satisfactory competency assessments will be uplifted to Qualified Band 7 role.

Role Requirements:

RGN

Degree qualification 2:2 level or above in a Science or Health related course.

2 years post registration experience

Previous Gynaecology/Early Pregnancy experience is Desirable.

Main duties of the job

Be able to undertake consultations independently, including interpreting assessment, relevant history taking and physical and psychological assessment and transvaginal ultrasound.

The post-holder will deliver and contribute to the development of nurse led early pregnancy clinics, working as an autonomous practitioner, and delivering high quality, expert nursing care. Assessing, planning and implementing care for management of miscarriage, administration of medication, venepuncture and other clinical skills are required.

Excellent communication skills are essential due to the need to deliver highlysensitive and upsetting information to both patients and relatives.

The Post Holder will have a good professional knowledge of all aspects of Early Pregnancyultrasound, and participate actively in CPD and otherdevelopmental activities. Participation in equipment testing and analysis for Quality Assurance is required.

Job responsibilities

Performance of clinical ultrasound training within the EPAU department andacademic ultrasound training at University.

Maintain high working standards in Early Pregnancy ultrasonography.

Participate in multi-disciplinary team working.

Interpret ultrasound image appearances and formulate a written report under clinical supervision.

To manage a clinical caseload.

Competency in ultrasound scanning in early pregnancy, be able to diagnose and interpret the results of normal and complex scans such as ectopic, molar and miscarriages. While also assessing for any gynaecological pathology such as fibroids or cysts and referring to the MDT as appropriate.

Be able to undertake consultations independently, including interpreting assessment, relevant history taking and physical and psychological assessment and transvaginal ultrasound.

Perform ultrasound scans in accordance with the safety guidance and recognise guidelines and can appropriately diagnose and communicate findings effectively to women and their families.

Produce a clinically accurate and diagnostic report that will enhance overall care according to Trust protocol, consequently influencing patient care and management.

To provide safe, effective, compassionate women centred care. To make a positive difference to the experience of women and their partners and/or family at an extremely vulnerable and distressing time.

To be able to demonstrate advanced communication skills, To provide support and counselling to women experiencing early pregnancy loss and be able to demonstrate evidence based use of all management options.

Act as a specialist resource for patients, ensuring they have a full understanding of their conditions, and interpreting complex information to ensure they are fully informed and supported in the decision making process.

The ability to communicate complex and highly sensitive and delicate issues of an emotional nature with empathy and sensitivity towards the patient in high impact emotional environments. Being aware of the different potential reactions from patients and their families and being able to manage hostile and aggressive reactions.

The ability to deal with being directly exposed to highly emotional and distressing situations on a daily basis and the ability to communicate distressing and emotional news such as unexpected death of a fetus or abnormal pregnancy such as an ectopic or molar. Also managing this with patients whom are from different ethnic backgrounds.

After diagnosis to provide relevant management and care by providing patients with counselling, prescribing medications and/or gaining consent, depending on the appropriate management.

Facilitate nurse led clinics, face to face, online and telephone services

Communicate scan findings to patients and clinicians, providing advice on future management when required.

Maintain accurate documentation, including production of relevant graphical representation pertinent to the examination, ensuring patient confidentiality at alltimes.Comply with Trust Health & Safety policies, including attendance at specified mandatory training sessions.

Comply with departmental and organisational policies and procedures, including reporting of all accidents and incidents.

Contribute to the implementation and promotion of quality service, withcontinuous re-evaluation of working practices and protocol reassessment whennecessary.

Identify potential hazards by monitoring the condition of equipment within thedepartment and reporting any defects in a timely manner.

Participate in inter-departmental and intra-departmental audit and research initiatives as appropriate.

Participate in appropriate personal development programmes as required, andmaintain a continuous CPD portfolio.

Participate in Quality Assurance programme.Maintain a polite, courteous and professional attitude to staff and patients at all times.

Maintain effective and efficient communication links within the department andwith other directorates, thus promoting a positive image of the department.

Communicate highly sensitive information to patients and family, with empathy, providing reassurance and understanding.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Registered Nurse (current registration).
  • First level degree (or equivalence through experience).
  • Master's degree level (7) of study (or equivalence through extensive experience in specialist field).
  • Evidence of continual professional development.
  • Evidence of further training in counselling or/and breaking bad news.

EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Significant post registration experience in early pregnancy.
  • Experience in recognising the normal and abnormal pathology of pregnancy.
