Job summary

This is a replacement post for Specialty Doctor in Medical Microbiology to the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust (LGT). The post is permanent, whole-time equivalent (amounting to 10-programmed activities).

You will be joining a team of 7 consultants (6 full time equivalent) and a Microbiology Specialty Registrar, to provide clinical microbiology and infection control services for Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, and will be mainly based at the University Hospital Lewisham site.

Provide high quality medical microbiology and infection control support to clinicians in hospital and community. Main duties include:

Work closely with other Consultant Microbiologists, Laboratory Staff and Infection Control Team to provide high quality Microbiology and Infection Control Service.

Conduct regular Ward Rounds, especially to promote prudent use of antibiotics.

Be responsible for authorising accurate, timely and interpretive reports to the clinicians.

Support innovative measures in the department to improve quality and efficiency.

Main duties of the job

PParticipate and facilitate accreditation and other inspections by external agencies.

Support and advise the ESEL Pathology Partnership in order to provide high quality and timely Microbiology, Virology and Molecular results to the Trust.

The workload is managed through a single rota, and the post holder will be mainly based at University Hospital Lewisham.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Share with the Consultant Microbiologists and with the Specialist Registrar in providing the Microbiology service, both clinical and laboratory.

Take part in a 1:7 on call rota (Category A) pro-rata.

Undertake CME/CPD as required by the relevant medical Royal College, and facilitated by funds from the Trust.

Take part in audit using the Trust audit facilities.

Teaching and training of junior doctors, medical students, laboratory and other healthcare professionals

Advising on day to day and on call infection control activities is shared with the Consultant Microbiologists.

Support and advise the ESEL Pathology Partnership in order to provide high quality and timely Microbiology, Virology and Molecular results to the Trust.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Training

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full registration (with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • Completion of at least 4 years' full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time / flexible basis). At least 2 out of 4 years' postgraduate training should be in specialty training programme or as a fixed-term specialty trainee in Medical Microbiology or Infectious Diseases. or Equivalent experience and competencies in Medical Microbiology or Infectious Diseases.
  • Applicants that are either partially or non-UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to UK qualifications.

Desirable

  • MRCP or evidence of equivalent qualification.
  • FRCPAth
  • Additional higher qualification e.g. MSc, PhD, MD

Clinical Experince

Essential

  • Evidence of adequate training and experience in Medical Microbiology and Infection control.
  • Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation.
  • Evidence of commitment to continuing professional development (CPD) and lifelong learning.

Teaching Experience

  • Evidence of interest in, and experience of, teaching.

Management and Administrative Experience
