Job summary

Applications are invited for a Senior Clinical Fellow in Haematology as a fixed term appointment of 12 months with a possibility of extension for a further 12 months. This is a new post and is available with immediate effect. The postholder will be primarily based at Epsom Hospital, but with cross-site working at St. Helier Hospital, also.

The successful candidate will join an established and enthusiastic team across the sites of 8 WTE consultants, 2 Specialist Trainees on the South West London training programme, a Core Medical Trainee in medicine, a Foundation Year trainee and a Physicians associate.

The department is well supported by specialist nurses in haemato-oncology, blood transfusion and anti-coagulation. The department has an excellent record of participation in clinical trials, and benefits from the support of a dedicated research team linked to the NCRN.

All applicants must have full registration with the GMC and be a holder of MRCP PACES or equivalent degree on the date of interview. Candidates wishing to work part time or job share will also be considered and are encouraged to apply.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for:

o Day to day management of haematology day unit patients.o Bone Marrow biopsy listso Assisting consultants in the outpatient clinics and wards.o Attending clinics and assessing patients and formulating treatment decisions and seeking advice from the consultant as appropriate.o Laboratory work as appropriate to previous experience.o Teaching and training staff in other medical disciplines, nursing and support staff as appropriate.o Communication with other team members as appropriate.o Participation in relevant audit and quality assurance processes.o Abide by the Clinical & Corporate Governance policies of the Trust.o To make sure that the guidance from the General Medical Council on Good Medical Practice is at the centre of your clinical practice.o To keep up to date in medical knowledge by Continuous Medical Education in the best interest of the patient.o Although a timetable will be provided, you will be expected to be flexible, occasionally in the interests of patient care, and to meet the needs of the department as decided by the clinical leadership team.

About us

The clinical haematology services at Epsom and St Helier comprise an integrated service with joint Clinical Leads Dr Sneha Muthalali and Dr Caroline Ebdon.

At both sites the Haematology and Chemical Pathology laboratories have merged to form a Trust wide Blood Sciences department. Dr Caroline Ebdon, Dr Sneha Muthalali and Dr Helen Johnstone are joint heads of the Blood Sciences laboratory service across site. There is a Blood Sciences Service Manager who is directly responsible to the joint heads of department. He delegates managerial and scientific duties to other senior scientific staff, notably the scientific leads of the various laboratory sections.

The Department has improved its links with the Royal Marsden Hospital (RMH) in recent years, and RMH now provides funding for Pathology Reporting within the Centre for Molecular Pathology (HMDS).

Clinical Haematology outpatients, inpatient and day case activity is also managed by the Clinical Services Division.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • GMC registration
  • MRCP PACES or equivalent degree

Desirable

  • BSc or equivalent
  • Prizes or honors in MBBS or equivalent
  • Part 1 MRCPath or equivalent

Clinical Experience, Management & Administrative Experience

Essential

  • Minimum of 4 years of clinical experience after graduation with minimum two years of Core Medical training or equivalent
  • Experience of general internal medicine
  • Maintaining good medical practice
  • Professional behaviour and probity
  • Reliable work record

Desirable

  • Experience of Haematology and other medical specialties at ST3 level equivalent and above

Teaching Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of teaching experience

Desirable

  • Evidence of exposure to different groups/teaching methods
  • Teaching qualification(s)

Research Experience

  • Demonstrates understanding of the importance of audit, research and clinical risk management.
