Job summary

An exciting position has arisen for a dynamic and innovative individual to join the Cwm Taf Morgannwg local public health team working as a Principal Health Protection Practitioner. This is a strategic role working in health protection.

Skills and experience required of the post holder include partnership working, leading on the planning, development and implementation of local health protection work. The post holder will contribute to leading and managing a team working to improve the health of the population of Cwm Taf Morgannwg, under the guidance of a Consultant in Health Protection.

The team is committed to agile working and will involve home working alongside working in office sites across Cwm Taf Morgannwg.

Main duties of the job

This is a strategic role that requires the post holder to work within an integrated 'all-hazards' health protection team that works across Cwm Taf Morgannwg Public Health Team and the Primary Care Directorate.

The role involves developing and maintaining strategic partnerships across the statutory, voluntary, private and independent sectors to plan cohesively to protect the health and wellbeing of the local population. The post holder is responsible for providing highly specialised advice and expertise on the development of health protection strategy, policy and practice, with particular emphasis on the promotion of health and well-being.

The post holder is responsible for leading, planning, implementing and evaluating public health programmes locally in line with local and national priorities agreed with Public Health Wales, the Health Board and strategic partners. They will provide professional leadership and management of staff and resources, as appropriate.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this role; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Evidence of continuing professional/personal development
  • Extensive practical and theoretical knowledge of government/ NHS policy agenda and Public Health practice and models.
  • Understanding of determinants of health and health inequalities

Desirable

  • Up to date knowledge of developments in WG health-related strategies
  • Information management and an understanding of health related data and its interpretation

Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience in a senior role in Public Health/Health Protection or working in local government
  • Substantial direct experience of working with diverse senior professional and managerial groups across a range of organisations and professional disciplines including development, managing and evaluation of significant elements of work.
  • Significant direct experience of working with communities
  • Extensive experience of training/facilitation work with a diverse range of stakeholders at all levels of organisations A track record of presenting public health concepts, theories, knowledge and evidence in different fora
  • Staff management and development experience

Desirable

  • Experience of working with the main partner organisations especially local government understanding the environmental and "political" context in which they operate.
  • Qualitative research methods.
  • Experience of leading/developing and implementing varied Public Health/Health Protection initiatives
