We are looking to recruit an experienced nurse able to take on a dual role -

  • Provide Nursing support to our expert team of clinical staff on day shifts as part of our dynamic, highly reputable multidisciplinary team
  • Work with the Senior Discharge Planners, Matrons, Lead Nurse and Medical Team to manage the Discharge Planning & In-Reach service on the unit. As a Junior sister you should hold both a neonatal and mentorship qualification and have some previous experience at band 6. You will be supported in developing management skills through individualised professional leadership and clinical development.

Main duties of the job

  1. To coordinate the In-reach Clinic working closely with the senior Neonatal Discharge Planners and community services to actively reduce length of stay.
  2. To work in partnership with the multidisciplinary team and senior discharge Planners to actively determine the best place for continuing care of each baby, whether this is staying on the unit, transfer to their local hospital, home or paediatric ward.
  3. Work closely with the Senior Nurses and senior Discharge Planners to manage patient flow from admission through to discharge whilst maintaining high quality patient care and efficient use of resources.

RESPONSIBILTIES

CLINICAL PRACTICE

  1. To adhere to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct at all times
  2. To work in close liaison with the paediatric bed manager and other neonatal units to ensure the smooth transition of care during discharge.
  3. To oversee and manage the Neonatal Unit in-reach clinic.
  4. To be aware of the transfers out of King's College Hospital neonatal unit and liaise with the other units in transferring babies back to local hospitals
  5. Be aware of individual family dynamics, social and cultural diversity. Provide information and support to parents/carers as appropriate, following consultation with members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  6. Ensure neonatal screening processes are up to date and clear records kept within a timely fashion.
  7. With the sister-in-charge of special care and other discharge facilitators ensure that staff maintain accurate records, reflecting both changes in the patients condition and the treatment delivered.
  8. To ensure parents and carers receive health education and advice to maintain/achieve a healthy lifestyle.
  9. To be aware of the Trusts safeguarding policies and procedures and demonstrate ability to effectively raise concerns and work closely with the Trusts safeguarding team and other agencies to protect children. Take an active role in the units safeguarding meetings.
MANAGEMENT
  1. To actively support the implementation of the Trust and Child Health nursing strategy and uphold the ethos of the local philosophy.
  2. To take an active role in the parent satisfaction survey ensuring all parents have access to reporting their stay and writing action plans to improve the care provided on the neonatal unit.
  3. To be flexible in the work schedule in order to provide cross cover where and when needed. To take direct managerial responsibility for the clinical area in the absence of a senior sister or as delegated by the Senior Nurse
  4. Develop an understanding and cooperation between the acute and primary care interface of service provision as well as other agencies where appropriate.
  5. To co-ordinate and oversee Bliss and Kings Volunteers.
  6. To liaise with Transitional care on the postnatal ward and facilitate training of Neonatal Unit staff allocated to work there.
  7. To contribute positively towards the delivery of a cost effective service, adjusting staffing levels to meet demand and assisting the Modern Matron to keep within agreed sources.
  8. To act as a positive role model to junior staff members and ensure the management of the special care area is maintained at all times by direct and indirect supervision of the sister-in-charge of the area.
  9. To act as a team leader to an identified group of staff, monitoring and documenting the development of their clinical skills.
  10. To make a positive contribution to service development affecting the clinical area and positively influence others to adapt to change.
  11. To carry the Unit bleep as required, resolving local problems/ conflicts, keeping managers/others informed and maintaining positive team dynamics in the unit at all times.
  12. Ensure compliance with the Trusts Equality and Diversity Policy, supporting the delivery of the Trusts Race Equality Scheme and the Trusts duty to positively promote race equality and equality of opportunity for disabled people ensuring services are responsive to the needs of equality groups.

EDUCATION AND RESEARCH

  1. To act as a mentor to junior staff members, responsible for the orientation, supervision and ongoing development of junior and student nurses and midwives, in conjunction with Line Manager and Practice Development staff.
  2. To act as a mentor to staff and students undertaking further education as requested, ensuring a positive learning experience and facilitating the development of their clinical skills, completing competency documents.
  3. To contribute to the wider educational activities within the Care Group ensuring attendance at and contributing to the delivery of educational activities to the Multi-disciplinary team within the Care Group
  4. To participate in any research projects conducted in the clinical area as appropriate
  5. To assist in the development of policies and protocols within the clinical area and support the continuous quality improvement by audit and surveys and implement changes in the light of findings.
  6. To ensure that practice is evidence based and that clinical guideline standards and policies are implemented and to be actively involved in auditing practice in conjunction with the senior nursing team
  7. To act as a clinical resource within the Unit and across the Care Group as necessary

PERSONAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  1. To work within and accept responsibility for maintaining agreed levels of clinical competence and ensure clinical currency as new technologies are introduced
  2. Ensure own development and continue clinical competency by working a clinical shift in the intensive care or High dependency areas on a regular basis as required by the Modern Matron
  3. To keep up to date with NMC, Trust and Care Group policies and guidelines and to adhere to these at all times
  4. To be a fully active and committed member of the multidisciplinary team operating in the Care Group
  5. To demonstrate an insight into own professional development, contributing to the process of identifying own educational and clinical training needs in conjunction with the team leader
  6. Participate in own Individual Performance Review and after suitable training, to be responsible for undertaking timely reviews for own team of junior staff
  7. To ensure own educational commitment is sufficient to maintain Revalidation requirements and to ensure own mandatory training certificates are current, in liaison with Line Manager

Person Specification

Education & Experience

Essential

  • 1st level Registered Paediatric Nurse.
  • Neonatal Qualification or equivalent
  • Mentoring Qualification or equivalent
  • Current NALS Certificate or willingness to undertake
  • Clinical expertise relevant to post advertised
  • Demonstrable interest in and commitment to the professional development of others
  • Able to organise and manage day to day departmental activities and activities of a large MDT
  • Team building & working skills
  • Able to express an understanding of the key principles of Infection Control
  • Understanding of issues related to Change Management
  • Problem solving skills - able to respond to unexpected issues and provide first line response
  • Ability to adapt to ensure achievement of objectives within constantly changing situations and environments
  • Able to relate and communicate with parents and staff at all levels and from different professions.
  • Self motivated and has high work standards
  • Working knowledge of nurse-led/immunisation clinic

Desirable

  • Ability to express an understanding of audit
  • Understand HR processes and issues pertaining to staff management
  • Basic Computer Literacy; able to use word & Excel
