Job summary

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as a member of the SW London Integrated Care System infection prevention and control team, supervised by the Lead Infection Prevention and Control Manager. They will be supported to be able to work in the role of promoting, advocating and enabling best infection prevention and control practice through developing relationships with and health and social care providers across South West London. Due to the nature of the role and to support personal development, they will be expected to travel independently and work across sites in South West London. This will include rotating to work along IPC colleagues at Acute Trusts, Primary Care, Community healthcare settings. They will work closely with providers including care homes and Primary Care providing specialist advice in addition to training, surveillance of communicable infections and the auditing of environments and clinical practice audits.

1.1 Assist in the investigation of outbreaks of infection and participate in monitoring prevention and control measures.

1.2 Assist in post infection reviews of alert organisms, identifying learning outcomes, assisting in the development of improvement action plans and escalating concerns.

1.3 To be aware of infection prevention and control national guidance to provide advice on infection prevention and control principles to enable the provision of safe, quality care.

1.4 Regularly evaluate control of infection measures in specific situations with a view to constant improvement.

1.5 Advise on the care of individuals with infectious conditions and seek advice from IPC lead where appropriate.

1.6 Collect clinical data for use by the infection prevention and control team for the purpose of monitoring and the surveillance of infections.

1.7 Participate in audit programmes in care home, primary care settings and in clinical areas when working with IPC colleagues in Acute Trusts, reporting results and facilitating change as appropriate

1.8 Liaise and report on a daily basis with the Lead Nurse on current infection prevention and control business and issues.

1.9 Monitor compliance with infection prevention and control policies

1.10 Assist in the development of infection prevention and control champions in primary care and care home settings. Enable and support their professional development through visits to their workplace, setting up link persons SW London forums to support networking and educational sessions.

1.11 Promote infection prevention and control principles and best practice, leading by example.

1.12 In liaison with the Lead Infection Prevention and Control Manager, develop and evaluate specific and relevant teaching programmes for all disciplines and grades of staff within health and care providers across South West London.

1.13 Contribute to existing teaching programmes and initiate new ones.

1.14 Participate in the ongoing education of the infection prevention and control link workers.

1.15 Pursue their own educational development in line with current legislation and personal needs for professional development.

1.16 Deliver and participate with infection prevention and control education to all grades of staff.

1.17 Deputise for team members in their absence, under supervision, to ensure service provision.

1.18 Assist in the preparation infection prevention and control reports for relevant committees and boards.

1.19 Participate in the formulation of policies for infection prevention and control.

1.20 Liaise with other specialists and relevant colleagues on a regular basis.

1.21 Manage own workload in a flexible manner.

1.22 Be an active member of working groups relating to infection prevention and control.

1.23 Be aware of current legislation and national and local documents

Person Specification

Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Advanced Keyboard skill - Advanced use of IT packages e.g. Microsoft Office package
  • Confident - able to deal with individuals at all levels and in challenging situations
  • Ability to work as part of a team and work flexibly to provide support to other departments and teams as and when necessary

Education / Qualifications

Essential

  • Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery council
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Recognised Teaching/training qualification or experience of teaching
