Dental Therapist

Job summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic and conscientious dentists with good interpersonal and clinical skills to join the School of Dental Hygiene And Therapy.

The post holder will be responsible for clinical care of patients and education of student dental therapist/hygienists within the School of Dental Therapy and Hygiene. This involves teaching academic and clinical skills to enable successful students to gain professional registration with the General Dental Council.

Main duties of the job

o Provide high quality dental treatment to patients, either directly or via students being supervised.

o Maintain up to date knowledge and skills on clinical techniques and their application to patient dental care. Provide clinical advice to staff on dental matters, as appropriate.

o Supervise student therapist/hygienists' clinical activity on clinics across all campuses of King's Dental Institute and outreach placements, including Norwood Academy and Queen Mary's Hospital. T

o To undertake continuous assessment of the student therapist/hygienists.

o To maintain records of student activity.

o To participate in dental health promotion visits.

o To assist and support senior staff with pastoral care of students, to include counselling and disciplinary proceedings.

o Act as personal tutor for the student dental therapist/hygienists. Separate descriptors are assigned to this.

o Develop teaching material and deliver teaching to student therapist/hygienists over each of the 3 years of the course, covering academic, preclinical and clinical subject areas.

o Comply with all the Primary Care Dental Service clinical policies, including IRMER, Health & Safety requirements, Data Protection and other legislation or procedures relevant to the safe practice of dentistry for both patients and staff.

o Participate in all aspects of quality assurance and clinical governance, including audit, peer review and clinical supervision.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide high quality dental treatment to patients in Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (KCH), either directly or via students being supervised.

Maintain up to date knowledge and skills on clinical techniques and their application to patient dental care. Provide clinical advice to staff on dental matters, as appropriate.

To supervise student therapist/hygienists clinical activity on clinics across all campuses of Kings Dental Institute and outreach placements, including Norwood Academy and Queen Marys Hospital. The applicant should have an interest in all aspects of dentistry associated with the dental therapists Scope of Practice.

To undertake continuous assessment of the student therapist/hygienists. Staff are expected to monitor student progress continuously and provide feedback at regular opportunities, both to students and the Director/Senior staff.

To maintain records of student activity. Written records of student progress will be prepared and maintained in order to track and monitor student progress throughout their programme of study.

To participate in dental health promotion visits. These are arranged throughout the student training programme and will require preparation of material and travelling to outreach/community based placements with a group of students.

To assist and support senior staff with pastoral care of students, to include counselling and disciplinary proceedings. A schedule of activity is arranged to support students who are having either personal or professional difficulties.

Act as personal tutor for the student dental therapist/hygienists. Separate descriptors are assigned to this.

Develop teaching material and deliver teaching to student therapist/hygienists over each of the 3 years of the course, covering academic, preclinical and clinical subject areas.

Comply with all the Primary Care Dental Service clinical policies, including IRMER, Health & Safety requirements, Data Protection and other legislation or procedures relevant to the safe practice of dentistry for both patients and staff.

Take part in staff meetings and training organised by and for the School.

Maintain and complete all required Trust mandatory training

Participate in all aspects of quality assurance and clinical governance, including audit, peer review and clinical supervision.

Participate in annual appraisal processes and demonstrate progression in line with key performance indicators agreed at appraisal.

Complete other duties delegated by senior staff.

The period of notice for this appointment to be 3 months on either side.

To hold professional indemnity which provides protection for the professional duties undertaken within the hours of employment at the Trust.

Maintain CPD requirements to ensure maintenance on the General Dental Council Register, including up to date knowledge and skills outlined in the competency framework for Band A salaried dentist.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full registration with the GDC
  • Vocational training or equivalent
  • Minimum two years clinical experience
  • To be on NHS England's National Primary Care Performers List

Desirable

  • Higher education teaching qualification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working within Primary Dental Care and/or Community Dental Service and/or Hospital settings.
  • Familiarity with the GDC regulations.

Skills

Essential

  • Excellent organisational skills, ability to manage own time and plan timed activities.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with patients, students, staff, the wider Trust team and the public.
  • Ability to recognise and manage challenging situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Understanding of clinical and information governance.
  • Competent clinical practitioner who is aware of clinical limitations and recognises the need to seek advice and support appropriately.
  • Demonstrate self-awareness and accountability.

  • Familiar with the General Dental Councils 'Preparing for Practice' learning outcomes for dental hygiene and therapy
