Job summary

Due to the promotion of the previous post holder, a fantastic opportunity has arisen for an exceptional mental health nurse leader to influence and lead the mental health nursing profession.

The Deputy Director of mental health nursing will report directly to the Deputy Chief Nursing Officer for England for professional system leadership and will provide expert clinical, practice and policy advice to NHS England, health systems, and health and social care providers. You will need to have extensive clinical and leadership experience within mental health settings, be able to work autonomously and be a credible and respected mental health nurse.

This role provides the opportunity for you to provide strategic nursing leadership for mental health services on behalf of NHS England, ensuring that the organisation provides system support for ICBs and providers to deliver high quality, safe mental health services now and in the future.

Main duties of the job

As a Deputy Director for Mental Health Nursing, the post holder will lead and work as part of a dynamic team in delivering an effective service supporting managers and staff across directorates to deliver high quality, safe mental health services now and in the future.

The post holder is the policy, quality improvement and professional advisory lead and is responsible for the strategic nursing leadership of mental health services on behalf of NHSE.

In collaboration with national partners, the post holder will be expected to create an annual plan with objectives that meet the directions of the Long Term Plan.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Provide autonomous expert advice to support national and regional plans
  • Deputise for the Deputy CNO
  • Work alongside the others to oversee all mental health policy and quality improvement work within NHSE.
  • Be responsible for the strategic nursing leadership for mental health within the Nursing Directorate on behalf of NHSE, in all healthcare settings, including acute, community and specialist mental health trusts. They will also ensure that NHSE provides system support for providers to deliver high quality, safe and sustainable mental health services now and in the future.
  • Ensure excellent engagement with national, regional and local clinical and quality improvement stakeholders to ensure improvements to mental health care are at the centre of service provision.
  • Work closely with the patient safety team to support improvement in outcomes and safety across mental health services.
  • Work closely with all other Directorates to ensure that mental health services align with national objectives, the needs and challenges facing the whole system and patients who use it.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Professional Qualification in mental health.
  • Further professional specialist qualification in mental health.
  • Current UK NMC Nurse or Midwife registrant without sanction
  • Educated to Masters level or equivalent level or equivalent experience of working at a senior level in specialist area.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • In depth additional expert knowledge acquired over a significant period of time in the area of mental health policy and practice
  • Subject matter expertise across a number of key areas relating to mental health.
  • Proven and significant leadership experience and/or formal management qualification.
  • Significant management experience at senior level in the NHS or other public healthcare related industry.
  • Extensive experience of delivering presentations to large groups of stakeholders in often pressured and politically sensitive environments.
  • Significant experience of managing and prioritising a large budget with solid knowledge of financial process requirements.

Desirable

  • Recent mental health clinical practice experience and Regulatory experience
  • Proven Board level experience of leading and delivering complex change and strategy development programmes in a politically sensitive and complex environment.

Skills Capabilities & Attributes

Essential

  • Skilled at data collection and analysis in general and specifically in relation to mental health policy and practice.
  • Ability to prepare and produce concise yet insightful communications for dissemination to senior stakeholders and a broad range of stakeholders as required.
  • Strong external communications skills in a politically sensitive environment with knowledge of and experience in handling media relations.
  • Demonstrable ability to work effectively between strategic and operational activities where required.
  • Demonstrable ability to manage own workload and make informed decisions in the absence of required information, working to tight and often changing timescales.
