Main duties of the job
Reporting to our Clinical Director, this position will suit someone who is looking for a change and, if not already based in the county, someone who would be interested in relocating to Cornwall.
Working in our friendly practice based in the heart of the local community in Newquay, you will provide routine dental care for patients (adult and paediatric) within the General Dental Council (GDC) published scope of practice.

Job responsibilities
Job Summary:
Provide routine dental care for patients (adult and paediatric) in Cornwall and the
Isles of Scilly within the General Dental Council (GDC) published scope of
practice.
Accountabilities:
As an employee you must take personal responsibility for understanding and complying
with Smile Togethers standards and any other Standards of Professional Conduct of any
government, regulatory organisation, licensing agency, or professional association
governing your professional activities.
Maintain an understanding of, and work in accordance with the values and
standards of Smile Together and its contractual obligation for NHS care.
Work in accordance with the professional standards set out by the GDC.
Work in accordance with the expectations laid out in the NHS contract.
Be responsible for maintaining a Personal Development Plan and Continued
Professional Development log.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of best practice and evidence-based guidance
of (but not limited to):
Clinical examination and record keeping
Oral health prevention strategies
Radiography
Antimicrobial prescribing
Management of acute dental conditions
Consent and correct documentation of extractions.
Management of dental trauma (adult and paediatric)
Treatment modalities deemed to be within the scope of practice of Dental
Therapists.
Ensure that any NHS patients are treated under the prescription of a GDC
registered Dentist.
Ensure patients are provided with cost estimates for treatment plans, that this
is signed documented in the individual health record before commencing a
course of treatment.
Ensure completed courses of treatment are recorded and submitted correctly.

When treating NHS patients, engage with the mandated Friends and Family
Test.
Maintain an awareness of current and correct referral criteria and pathways.
Where possible, take a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care, under
appropriate prescription and guidance.
Acknowledge a responsibility to highlight areas of development or gaps in their
own skills or knowledge with the Clinical Director for Workforce Development
so that appropriate support may be provided.
Work innovatively to optimise clinical efficiency and patient experience in
accordance with evidence-based best practice.
Actively engage with Smile Together teams and participate in audit activities,
development, and in-house meetings etc.
Be prepared to support colleagues including Joint Dental Foundation Core
Trainees.
Be prepared to deliver in-house training classroom sessions or webinars when
required to do so.
Be prepared to undertake temporary duties away from their home base (with
reasonable notice) when service output requires.
Undertake other reasonable duties as requested by the Head of the People
Team and CD Workforce Development.
GDC registration and indemnity certificate.

Essential
- Diploma of Dental Hygiene
- Full registration with the General Dental Council without conditions
Experience
Essential
- Competency in the full scope of practice as a Dental Hygienist acquired through training and clinical experience, including for example:
- Provide oral hygiene instructions, advice and smoking cessation advice
- Take full medical and dental histories
- Carry out full dental examinations
- Carry out periodontal examinations, including 6-point pocket charts, plaque, recession and bleeding indices
- Monitor the progression of periodontal disease
- Plan and carry out the treatment of periodontal diseases, including supragingival and subgingival scaling, root-surface debridement and polishing, using manual or ultrasonic instruments
- Prescribe, take and interpret radiographs (acting as operator, practitioner and referrer under the
- IRR99 and IR(ME)R regulations)
- Provide preventative treatment for caries, such as application of topical fluoride and fissure sealants
- Adjust overhangs and tooth surfaces
- interfering with periodontal treatment
- Place temporary fillings
- Replace crowns or fixed prostheses with a temporary cement
- Take impressions
- Place a rubber dam, when necessary for treatment
- Carry out oral cancer screening,
- including identifying abnormal anatomy and pathological signs and symptoms
- Provide periodontal care around implants
- Refer to and liaise with other DCPs
Desirable
- A minimum of 3 years dental experience
