Job summary

We are looking for a new staff member who shares our passion and commitment to work with individuals with Personality disorder to improve their wellbeing and achieve great outcomes together. We have a vacancy for a band 5 worker to join us and offer structured clinical management. Structured Clinical Management is a proven approach for working with people diagnosed with emotionally unstable personality disorders. Training will be provided, and this offers an exciting opportunity to join an established group of therapists to offer a quadrant wide therapy service within the community mental health team, as well as joining the wider network of therapists across the trust. The service works to meet the needs of service users who are experiencing significant difficulties with emotional instability and working within the local multi-disciplinary community teams. We pride ourselves on the quality of the service that we offer and place importance on supporting all our therapists to provide great care, with an emphasis placed on maintaining and developing skills and regular supervision.

Main duties of the job

This post would suit someone with a core mental health qualification and registration (including those recently qualified in nursing, social work, occupational therapy, or other appropriately registered therapists - see person spec for details) or a psychology graduate (eligible for BPS registration) with more than 2 years' experience in community mental health settings. The successful applicants will also have an interest in working collaboratively with service users to develop their skills to improve their ability to tolerate and manage strong emotion. It would suit someone who loves working as part of a team and alongside multidisciplinary colleagues. Ideally we are looking for someone with experience of working with this service user group in any care setting, or someone who has transferable skills.

Job responsibilities

The role will be interesting and varied, and the worker will have an opportunity to contribute to our group therapies programme for this group. There are also excellent opportunities to progress and undertake further training to progress. The post will be based out of one of the community teams, but the ability to work flexibly as the needs of the service demands will be essential. The post holder would expect some travel within their working week.

Person Specification

KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Qualification and continuing registration* in one of the core mental health professions (e.g. psychiatric nursing, social work, occupational therapy) or graduate worker with substantial other relevant experience and with demonstrable competence to work in the mental health field. *Continuing registration with body overseeing practice of core mental health profession, e.g. NMC or HCPC; for Graduate Workers registration with BPS
  • Completion of SCM Training (Short course) or willingness and aptitude to train.

AREAS OF EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE

Essential

  • Experience of assessment and treatment of clients across a range of care settings, e.g.outpatient, community, adult mental health and in patient settings
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, including adults with personality disorders
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary team working and inter-agency collaboration
  • Ability to take the appropriate action to address any issues or risks
  • Awareness of Child and Adult Safeguarding Procedures
  • Knowledge and awareness of specific clinical practices and issues relating to clients with mental health problems
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team

Desirable

  • Experience of working in a community mental health setting

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Essential

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Communicated condition related information to clients, relatives, undertakes group sessions with clients atmosphere may be highly emotive.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/ or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS
  • Ability to work and communicate therapeutically with clients and their families consistent with their level of understanding, culture, background and preferred ways of communicating
  • Ability to work and communicate as a responsible participating member of a multidisciplinary team and the ability to respect and value other members' contributions and to encourage participation of all involved
  • Ability to keep accurate and complete records of activities and communications consistent with legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to alert line manager / team when direction, policies and strategies are adversely affecting users of services or the public
  • Ability to time manage effectively and to work under pressure and to prioritise a clinical workload
