An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Band 7 CAMHS Crisis Team - Clinical Specialist to join our innovative and dynamic team at the Barnet CAMHS.

The BEH CAMHS - A&E Diversion Crisis Hub was created in March 2020 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic which seen the temporary closures of the Paediatric Department /reduced offer at Acute hospitals across the North Central London (NCL) sector to manage acute mental health crisis presentation in children, young people (CYP).

The post Holder will be required to assess patients across the urgent care pathway, working autonomously and flexibly to manage the day to day assessments and/or advising on management of CYP under the age of 18 years and their families presenting in the A&E liaison/diversion HUB/paediatric wards at BEH, Barnet General & North Middlesex University Hospital with self-harm and mental health difficulties and all other crisis colleagues across the North Central London (NCL).

This post holder will be required to undertake a range of therapeutic tasks individually and jointly with members of the multi-disciplinary team. To develop & maintain specialist clinical skills and expertise in the assessment of CYP psychiatric emergencies and deliberate self-harm. To receive and assess referrals from A&E, paediatric/general wards, Community Teams, schools and health colleagues across the NCL as well as self-referrals from CYP and their families.

Main duties of the job

1.To undertake initial mental health and risk assessment of CYP who present with high risk and/or following acts of deliberate self-harm.

2.To independently and/or jointly carry out assessments of the mental health needs of children and young people within a therapeutic framework and to contribute fully to the care planning process.

3. To provide a high standard of care for people in the care group in keeping with the philosophy and operational policies for the Crisis Team and in addition to the Trust's policies, practice and procedures.

4. To conduct accurate risk assessments and management plans, involving the service user, carer, and any other individuals relevant to the care of the service user, and to ensure that this is well documented (on RiO). All this in conjunction with other team members where appropriate.

5. To participate in the Care Programme Approach and take care coordination responsibility and ensure that relevant CPA documentation is in place. Participate in transition process to Adult Mental Health Services where appropriate and ensure effective discharge planning.

6. To be responsible for negotiating co-ordinated rehabilitative care packages, in conjunction with other professional agencies and networks, prior to discharge from inpatient units back to the community.

Person Specification

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Qualification at degree level or equivalent and registration with registration with relevant professional body with a core profession (clinical/counselling psychology, psychotherapy, systemic family psychotherapy social work, nursing, occupational therapy - NMC/ HCPC/UKCP/ACP)
  • Relevant training or qualification in child and adolescent mental health
  • Relevant training on safeguarding and child protection

Desirable

  • Training in one of the main therapeutic modalities.
  • Current experience of line management of Band 6
  • CAMHS experience and evidence of leading a change initiative which improved patient care

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE

Essential

  • Experience of clinical and risk assessment and treatment of children and young people across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in-patient settings.
  • Previous experience of working in CAMHS, with proven track record of working with children, young people and their families offering assessment and stabilisation during periods of high risk
  • Experience of case load management.

Desirable

  • Experience of teaching colleagues of other disciplines
  • Experience of working in an adolescent in-patient setting.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Essential

  • Evidence of well-developed clinical skills and knowledge in CAMHS
  • Working knowledge in at least one model of therapeutic work (e.g. Systemic, CBT, SFT, Psychodynamic).
  • Proven qualities in sustaining the mental, emotional and physical demands of specialised therapeutic work with disturbed and distressed adolescents and their families/care networks.
  • Capacity to deal with working conditions that may occasionally involve verbal abuse and frequent exposure to highly emotive material such as child abuse and family breakdown.

Desirable

  • Experience in family therapy processes.
  • Experience in using CBT techniques Knowledge of development in inter-agency partnership.
  • Experience in setting up and facilitating groups.
  • Specific knowledge of current issues for Adolescent mental health.
