Due to the promotion of the existing postholder we are delighted to share this opportunity for a Head of Nursing post within Sheffield Health and Social Care. The post holder will join the Directorate Leadership Team with a portfolio that covers a range of inpatient and community services. We are looking for a motivated and passionate senior nurse who has ability to inspire, support and facilitate our clinical teams and drive high quality care..

We are keen to ensure our senior nurses represent the diverse communities we work across and therefore we actively encourage applicants from ethnically diverse groups. You will need to be a mental health or learning disability nurse with recent experience in a mental health and learning disability provider. You will be expected to act on behalf of the Nursing and Quality Directorate, advising on Quality and Professional Nursing leadership matters. Experience of writing and presenting papers at strategic level is desirable

Main duties of the job

The Head of Nursing is a core member of the Directorate Leadership Team and is responsible for all aspects of clinical nursing practice ensuring nurses: have the right skills, in the right place to provide the right care at the right time; and are capable, confident & competent to deliver high quality service user centered care.The Head of Nursing is accountable and responsible for providing the professional leadership of the registered and non-registered nursing workforce across defined services.The Head of Nursing will have professional oversight of a nursing workforce of circa 600 Registered Nurses and will hold line management responsibility for approximately 10 senior nurses.You will need to be a mental health nurse with recent experience in a mental health and learning disability provider.

The directorate structure is under going review therefore there may be changes to the line management as part of this review, however professional supervision will be delivered through the nursing structure.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Hold overall responsibility for the standard of nursing care across all care pathways.
  • Ensure frontline clinical services have nurses with the right skills, in the right place, to provide the right care at the right time.
  • Ensure services meet the required regulatory Care Standards, as defined by the relevant legislation: CQC; Mental Health Act; Mental Capacity Act; Safeguarding Adults & Children; & Infection Prevention & Control.
  • Provide strategic and operational nursing input at a senior leadership level to ensure appropriate advice is provided to the clinical management teams so that effective, high quality, safe, recovery focused mental health services are delivered consistently across the services.
  • Provide professional leadership and direction to the matrons and nurse consultants in relation to evidence based mental health practice, and to represent the views of nurses locally and in Trust-wide forums.
  • Work with the Director of Nursing, Professions and Quality and other members of the senior clinical leadership team to ensure that all services have a clear clinical model of care delivery, that staff understand their roles and inputs in relation to this, and that a system of agreed quality metrics is used to demonstrate efficacy of care delivery
  • Work in close collaboration with Heads of Service, Clinical Directors, Heads of Profession, General Managers and external agencies, contributing to the planning and delivery of high quality mental health services locally.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • RMN/RNLD
  • Educated to master level in a healthcare related subject
  • Evidence of continuous professional and management development showing a combination of short courses, structured self-study or formal management courses

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Ability to forge relationships and influence across organisations and beyond boundaries
  • Team player with a strong commitment to collaborative working
  • Engenders confidence and credibility through the ability to build relationships with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent analytical skills with ability to deliver contentious information to groups and reconciles views
  • Open, honest and approachable in relationships with staff, peers and colleagues in partner organisations

Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of achievement of results across a broad range of outcomes whilst maintaining an operational, service user focus and personal integrity at all times
  • Experience of working in a senior nursing post in complex mental health or learning disability setting
  • Extensive knowledge of service issues and priorities facing Mental Health and/or Learning Disabilities services
  • Highly developed leadership skills
  • Experience of leading and facilitating change including service modernisation techniques
