Job summary

To act as an autonomous practitioner providing expert assessment in the field ofPaediatric Neuro-Disability Occupational Therapy (e.g. Cerebral Palsy,Muscular Dystrophy).

Main duties of the job

To use highly specialised, advanced clinical reasoning skills to contribute to differential diagnosis.

To deliver advanced treatment techniques and advice to patients (and their carers) with highly complex paediatric neurological presentations.

To work closely as part of the Paediatric Occupational Therapy Team and wider multidisciplinary team with all hospital based and community colleagues in order to maintain continuity of service.

To independently manage own daily complex caseload as part of a multidisciplinary team, triaging paediatric patients, ensuring that patients are seen by the most appropriate healthcare professional.

To be responsible for the effective treatment and management of Service users with a primary or suspected Paediatric Neuro-Disability requiring assessment, care planning and rehabilitation in Children Centre and community settings in order to facilitate appropriate pathway management and maximise their independence and functional ability.

To develop the upper limb service for children with neuro-disabilities (including splinting service) taking the lead for pathway/process developments.

To take a lead role in the post-graduate education of Occupational Therapy colleagues and other professions.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Experience

  • Extensive experience working within the paediatric neuro disability field
  • Managing a complex caseload
  • Experience of working within healthcare systems and neuro disability pathways and services

  • Experience of working alongside Paediatric Consultants or similar

Skills

Essential

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, nonverbal and written). Ability to use highly specialised clinical reasoning skills to contribute to differential diagnosis, and facilitate appropriate pathway management to maximise patient independence and functional ability. Advanced assessment and intervention skills. The physical ability to perform and cope with all aspects of manual handling, equipment and advanced manual treatment techniques. Ability to work efficiently and effectively within a team environment. Coaching/mentoring/ presentation/instructing/ class taking skills. Good IT skills. Knowledge and skills in Specialist equipment relevant to Neuro-disability. Autonomous practitioner with abilities to plan and prioritise own and others workload. Communicate complex information to a wide audience and adapt approach accordingly.
  • Self-motivated and capable of motivating others. Able to set priorities and deliver against targets. Ability to work collaboratively within the multi-disciplinary team. Excellent interpersonal skills. Innovative and passionate for the area of Neuro-disability.
  • Ability to carry out full range of duties (including travel between the various hospital and community sites) in a timely manner. Ability to work flexibly .

Desirable

  • The ability to speak or learn Welsh to a satisfactory level. Higher level IT e.g. data collection.
