Job summary

A full-time post as Consultant in Plastic Surgery is available at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, based at Amersham Hospital with clinical commitments at High Wycombe General Hospital, Stoke Mandeville Hospital and potentially at the other peripheral hospitals our department serves. There is also scope for collaborative working with our neighbouring trusts and plastic surgery departments, as part of the Integrated Care Partnership.

Applicants should be on the GMC Specialist Register, or within 6 months of achieving CCT at the time of interview.

Main duties of the job

This is a post in a busy general plastic surgery and burns department that has a broad referral base. The job is based at The New Skin Centre and there is necessity to develop the service and deliver care that meets the clinical need. This post has a particular focus on skin cancer treatment and integration of the delivery of care with the dermatology department working in an adjacent footprint. The acute aspect of this post has an emphasis on supporting our burns and acute plastic surgery service. On-call commitments will include 1 week in 9.5 consultant-led acute cover.

The successful applicant will join the current team of 10 consultants in this regional centre for plastic surgery and burns.

Job responsibilities

The key duties and responsibilities are:-

  • Plastic surgery and burns service responsibilities including on call (1 week in 9.5)
  • Outpatient clinics at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Wycombe General Hospital, Amersham Hospital and possibly other peripheral hospitals
  • Operating (acute and elective)
  • Care of inpatients and outpatients
  • Clinical and other administration as required by agreement
  • Teaching and training of junior staff and undergraduates (including educational and clinical supervisor role)
  • Participation in Clinical Governance
  • Departmental role within the team

Essential

  • Excellent leadership, organisational, communication, professional and personal skills to undertake effectively the role of consultant
  • Good personal and interpersonal skills
  • Good spoken and written English
  • Communication skills should be highly developed.
  • Experience of teaching doctors-in-training and undergraduates
  • Experience as formal taught course faculty, including leading the delivery of courses
  • Knowledge of the NHS
  • Formal management & leadership qualification and experience
  • Experience of leading the development of clinical services

  • Evidence of having changed practice as a result of audit, evidence of revisiting audit to improve practice

Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrable evidence of advanced experience beyond general consultant plastic surgeon competence in skin cancer management, and demonstrable commitment to a career in skin cancer subspecialty

Education, Qualifications & Training

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent GMC registrable qualifications
  • General training in skin cancer treatment including previous skin MDT involvement
  • Proficient in SLNBs and nodal basin dissection
  • Fellowship in Skin cancer eg TIG
  • CCT in Plastic Surgery OR Registration on GMC Specialist Register in Plastic surgery OR within six months of achieving CCT at the time of interview
  • FRCS (Plast) or equivalent qualification
  • Higher Research Degree (eg PhD or research MD)

Desirable

  • Can demonstrate that will be recognised as an educational trainer by the GMC by agreed start date of post
