Job summary

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated clinical leader looking for a new challenge to lead Royal London Hospital's Major Trauma Ward.

You will be a motivated and inspirational, caring and compassionate individual to lead the enthusiastic supportive team on our 17 bed unit, being a role model to our nursing team and work collaboratively with other members of the MDT.

This is an opportunity for someone who is passionate about patient care and safety and wants to work in a supportive environment with other passionate members of the multidisciplinary team, enjoys working under their own initiative, providing excellent nursing care and getting the basics right, inspiring your team and motivating them in the development of their clinical skills and knowledge.

You must possess excellent clinical, communication and organisational skills. You will be outward facing able to constructively challenge practice and must be able to inspire and motivate all grades of staff to drive forward quality of care.

Main duties of the job

To be a professional role model, leading and coordinating the ward team. Taking continuing responsibility and accountability for the 24-hour management and organization of the Ward. This involves managing a wide range of complex and sometimes conflicting priorities.

Provide specialist nursing advice to support and facilitate high quality, individualized care to patients /clients and relatives/carers in collaboration with the multi professional team, in line with the local and national targets.

At all times ensure that the needs of the patient are placed at the centre of care delivery.

To be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and ensure the ward is covered appropriately and be able to provide cover if required

To ensure that the ward is well led and that the team is proactive in the delivery of patient care.

Utilising clinic audit, research, supervision of practice and teaching the post holder will monitor and actively lead the improvement of standards of care.

Maintain a close relationship and collaboratively engage with relevant teams/departments involved on the complex care of Major trauma patients, such as After Trauma Team, Clinical psychologist and St Giles.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Evidence of Nursing Degree or working towards
  • Effective Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council

Desirable

  • University or in-house trauma training.
  • Qualification in any Communication or Leadership and Management course (such as ILM)
  • Mentorship or equivalent and/or recognized teaching qualification

Experience

Essential

  • Experience as a Band 6 in acute clinical setting
  • Substantial experience of working in a leading role including taking charge of a unit
  • Evidence of teaching and developing staff both formally and informally
  • Participation on recruitment process, including shortlisting and/or interviewing processes

Desirable

  • Completion of Preceptorship programme
  • Experience as a Band 6 in a Major Trauma Ward

Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of clinical issues relating to the management of trauma and other surgical and medical patients
