Job summary

We are currently seeking an enthusiastic, motivated registered associate practitioner to join our trust wide Moving & Handling and falls service.

The recent amalgamation of Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals, into University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust means that this is a really exiting time to join our team.

The Moving and Handling / Falls service provide education, specialist advice and deliver classroom and bedside based support for clinicians requiring support with safe moving and handling. The team are responsible for driving up UHD compliance with training, and reducing falls across the organisation.

Rota: 8am-4pm or 9am -5pm to ensure the service is covered.

Location: Royal Bournemouth and Poole Hospital

Main duties of the job

Your role will be to offer expert advice in safe and effective ways to move and handle patients, who are often in bed during their hospital day. Teaching in a classroom, will be required in this post.

You will also be involved in UHD wide education, and improvement strategies to raise awareness of Moving handling and falls prevention, so IT skills, and the passion to speak to others about patient safety (falls and M&H ) is key.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be required to both assist and support the Moving and Handling Risk Advisor in maintaining, developing and delivering the Moving and Handling Policy through the organisation, providing on-going support and education within the classroom and clinical settings.

And to assist and support the Falls Nurse in delivering a Falls Prevention programme across the Trust. The post holder will assist the Falls Nurse in monitoring the effectiveness of the Trust Falls Strategy and helping to ensure that the Trust is compliant with the national and local guidelines on reducing falls. Under the guidance of the Falls Nurse the post holder will provide specialist advice and guidance for the clinical areas.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Associate Practitioner/Nursing Associate foundation Degree in Health and Social Care
  • GCSE Maths qualification grade C or above or equivalent

Desirable

  • Moving Handling and Falls Champion

Experience

Essential

  • Recent experience as an HCSW/Therapy Assistant involved in direct patient care in an acute Trust environment; including patients with challenging behaviour and patients with mental health care needs or in distress.
  • Demonstrable competence of meeting patient care needs.
  • Experience in carrying out assigned care/assisting qualified staff to perform care after training/
  • Working in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Good standard of written and spoken English

Desirable

  • Relevant experience in post being applied for e.g. Moving&Handling Champion role or Falls Champion role
  • Undertaking clinical audits or similar

Technical Skills and Competencies

Essential

  • Able to communicate accurately and effectively with patients and colleagues both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent record keeping standards as outlined in the national HCSW code of conduct or AHP equivalent
  • Ability to communicate complex, challenging and sensitive information with inter-professionals, patients, carers and the general public while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Able to support and reassure patients/carers in distress face to face or on the phone
  • Able to support and reassure patients/carers in distress face to face or on the phone
  • Demonstrates understanding and optimum practice against the national HCSW code of conduct or AHP equivalent
  • Able to use a safety incident reporting system, investigation and verification process
  • Conduct or AHP equivalent

Desirable

  • Competent in extended role therapies including moving and handling/Falls
  • Clinical audit processes and methodology

Knowledge

Essential

  • A good understanding of risk assessments in relation to Moving and Handling

Desirable

  • Understanding of the audit process

Other requirements specific to the role

Essential

  • Confident to be able to challenge inappropriate practice and provide spontaneous training to resolve the issue
  • Ability to be able to deliver practical moving and handling training sessions to large or small groups in a variety of environments e.g. ward, training room, lecture theatre
  • Full driving licence
  • To be able to work across all sites within UHD
