We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated Clinical Fellow who is keen to progress in their career in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery.
The job will be primarily based at West Suffolk Hospital but with flexibility to gain further exposure at tertiary hospital level at the new Essex and Suffolk Elective Orthopaedic Centre at Colchester Hospital.
The post will provide both Trauma and Elective experience to the successful candidate in a moderately busy district hospital based in the historic market and cathedral town Bury St Edmunds where a good balance between work and family life is on offer.
The successful candidate will be part of the middle-grade which will run an on-call rota of 1:10.

You will be expected to provide supervision and teaching to junior staff in the team, and contribute to quality improvement work
Main duties of the job
KEY TASKS:
- Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of Trauma and Orthopaedics.
- To share with colleagues' responsibility for the day-to-day management of the trauma and orthopaedic department.
- To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
Duties and Responsibilities of the Post
- It is expected that the successful applicant will be working across the various firms in 6 month rotations, so they will gain experience in general trauma and orthopaedics.
- They will be supervised by a Consultant to the degree that their training requires.
- Clinical duties can include attending orthopaedic and fracture outpatient clinics, assisting in operating sessions, and in consultant and associate specialist ward rounds and an active participant in the trauma rota.
- West Suffolk Hospital will be undertaking a proportion of their elective orthopaedic operating at the new Elective Orthopaedic Centre in Colchester, so the successful candidate should be prepared to travel along with the consultant and SCP.
- On call is with the other StRs and middle grades. There is currently a 1:10 24 hour non-resident on call rota.

THE DEPARTMENT OF ORTHOPAEDICS AND TRAUMA
Introduction
There are 62 Orthopaedic beds in two mixed-sex wards with six-bedded bays and there is open access to beds on the Paediatric Ward. Elective patients are admitted to F4, emergency patients to F3.
Paediatric Orthopaedic services are covered on site. Paediatric trauma is covered by the on-call duty Consultant.
There is the usual complement of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and plaster-room technicians.
The Accident and Emergency Department is run by three Consultants in Accident and Emergency Medicine and the hospital is a first-line receiving hospital in the event of a major accident. CT and MRI are available on site.
The Trust delivers services to patients seven days a week and aims to provide equality of treatment and outcome regardless of the day of the week. To meet these aims and changing service requirements, the Trust may need you either to work temporarily outside of your core hours or to permanently change your core working days and hours. The Trust will give you reasonable notice, where possible, of temporary changes to your days or hours of work and will consult with you and/or your staff representatives about substantial permanent changes, but ultimately, these are changes which may be required of you.
There are ten Speciality Registrars (7 East of England trainees, 1 Belgium trainees and 1 Sri Lankan and this post), eight FY2 doctors, eight Surgical Care Practitioners, two trauma specialist nurses and one advanced nurse practitioner.

Essential
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- MBBS or equivalent
- Success in MRCS Examination or equivalent
Desirable
- Near completion of Specialist Training in Orthopaedic Surgery
Clinical Experience
Essential
- 2-3 years supervised training in an appropriate SpR equivalent training programme.
- Ability to offer clinical opinion on a range of problems both emergency and elective within speciality.
- A wide experience of orthopaedic and trauma surgery
Desirable
- In their 3rd Year of Specialist Training (or more experienced)
Management and Administrative Experience
Essential
- Experience of audit management
- Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets.
Teaching Experience
Essential
- Ability to teach clinical skills.
- Experience of supervising FY1s and FY2s
Desirable
- Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates
Research Experience
Essential
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
Desirable
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Knowledge
