We are seeking to appoint a substantive Consultant Medical Oncologist to join our existing site-specialist multidisciplinary teams in the fields of Gynaecology, Skin and AOS. This is a part-time position (7.5 PAs) The post will be based at St Bartholomew's Hospital. The successful candidate will join a well-established team and will play a key role in developing gynaecological and skin services across the Trust, cancers, as well as the acute oncology team. The posts offer an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and welcoming consultant team, to develop new models of care/services that support the people in north-east London and beyond.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate professional excellence and the ability to deliver effective care. They will need to agree a job plan with the Clinical Director. This post is advertised as a part-time 7.5 PA position; a reduced timetable could also be considered prior to appointment.

You require full registration with the General Medical Council with the licence to practice.

Main duties of the job

To contribute to the provision of a comprehensive, efficient and high-quality evidence-based Medical Oncology service, with continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.

Leadership, development, and organisation of the services in his/her charge in line with Trust / Divisional business plans. Full participation in the management of the Barts Cancer Centre (BCC). Liaison and communication with the Clinical Academic Group Director and General Manager and with the Deputy Director of Operations of BCC.

To lead outpatient clinics as specified in the job plan. The typical clinic template for a three hour clinic would be 3 new patients and 12 follow up patients.

To lead medical oncology ward rounds for gynaecology and skin cancer inpatients. A typical ward round would consist of 5-10 patients.

Job responsibilities

To develop his/her own interests and specialities within oncology, including active participation in research programmes.

To have corporate and individual responsibility for the professional management of doctors in training.

To have regard at all times to the clinical and quality standards set out in the NHS Cancer Plan, the Improving Outcomes reports and National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidance reports.

To liaise effectively and on a timely basis with General Practitioners, community services, and all healthcare agencies.

To maintain and promote team and multidisciplinary work.

To participate in the consultant on-call rota.

To participate fully in the preparation for and representation at peer review site visits.

To engage fully in the annual job planning and appraisal cycle and to contribute to the appraisal of doctors in training

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MB BS, or equivalent
  • MRCP(UK) , CCT in Medical Oncology (or within 6 months of date of interview

Desirable

  • Higher degree, e.g. MD/PhD

Knowledge

Essential

  • Broad based knowledge of and understanding of Medical Oncology including systemic therapy and the principles of Palliative care.
  • Specialist knowledge in the management of gynaecological and skin malignancies and in the provision of acute oncology services

Training expected

Essential

  • Higher Specialist Training in Medical Oncology.
  • Experience in teaching / training undergraduates and postgraduates

Management/Audit Experience
