Job summary

We are offering an exciting opportunity for one new member of staff to join our friendly and experienced Newborn Hearing Screening Team. As a newborn hearing screener you will work alongside the midwifery staff on the maternity wards at both the Royal Derby Hospital and Queen's Hospital Burton. You will deliver a high quality newborn hearing screening service designed to identify hearing impairment in newborn babies as early as possible.

In service training is offered and the post holder is required to complete a Level 3 Diploma in Screening. Obtaining this qualification requires work in the post holders' own time for a period of 9-12 months. The course includes NHSP e-Learning modules. You will be assessed using a range of written, oral, and practical assessments, culminating in an external practical assessment.

The Newborn Hearing Screening Programme is a 7 day per week service, 8 am to 4 pm.

Main duties of the job

You will be required to perform newborn hearing screening using automated equipment. Individuals are required to work flexible hours during the daytime, including weekends and bank holidays.

You will be based mainly at one of our two main hospitals (Royal Derby Hospital and Queen Hospital Burton). You will be required to work at other community clinics once a week meaning that you need to have access to and be able to drive a car.

The post holder will perform a range of newborn hearing screening tests. The post holder is required to update the national Smart 4 Hearing platform and Auditbase patient management systems with hearing screen results.

The post holder will advise service users on access to and use of services, for example Children's Audiology. The post holder will be required to supervise and/or train less experienced staff in own area of work.

Person Specification

Education, Training and Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSE English grade C or above (or equivalent)
  • IT literate with good knowledge of Microsoft Office

Desirable

  • Level 3 diploma for Health Screeners

Experience & Knowledge

Essential

  • Experience caring for/handling babies/infants
  • Experience working with the general public
  • Experience working alone without direct supervision
