Job summary

Applications are invited for the above post of Consultant in Geriatric Medicine in the Elderly Medicine (DOME) Team, based at St Richard's Hospital part of the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will join a highly regarded Department with a regional reputation for excellence. Elderly Medicine/Frailty is an area that is only expected to grow in the coming years and as such we are looking to recruit a dynamic and motivated workforce to help develop and improve the services we currently offer in the Trust. This is a time of real excitement as we look to build a team that can work with our key stakeholders in developing new pathways. This role in particular would focus on ward based elderly care, ensuring the best possible outcomes for patients whilst also contributing to improving mortality, patient experience, length of stay etc. As a team we are also looking to develop further community work, dementia services, and enhance our SDEC, virtual wards and front door frailty services. We also welcome an appropriate specialist interest. The post holder will work with the multi-disciplinary team and Physician colleagues across the Trust.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role would be to support and develop the elderly inpatient service, at St Richard's Hospital. Working with colleagues at our other sites in Worthing, , Princess Royal in Haywards Heath and the Royal Sussex County in Brighton. Our aim is to build upon our strengths and improve our performance in other areas to become nationally recognised as an all-round excellent care provider achieving the best outcome for our patients. The post holder will: o Support the ward inpatient team, Supervising the ward multidisciplinary team. Have responsibility for inpatients at University Hospital Sussex at the St Richard's site, delivering daily ward input as needed. o Provide appropriate cover for patients admitted under the care of another paired consultant during the absence on leave of colleagues o Provide education to the wider MDT as part of the DOME educational program. o There is responsibility for general professional training of the junior members of the department and contributing to the training of nurses and other staff and participating in the activities of the Health Education Centre including Medical and Clinical Audit. The successful candidate will be included on the on-call rota for GIM and with the other consultants in DOME, currently on a 1 in 8 basis.

Experience / Qualifications

Essential

  • Basic medical degree
  • MRCP or appropriate specialist qualification
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
  • CCT in Geriatric Medicine or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC

  • CCT in General Medicine or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
  • Evidence of additional qualifications, accreditation in sub-specialty area eg gerontology, education
