CLINICAL RESEARCH FELLOW IN HAEMATOLOGY (MYELOID)

Applications are invited to apply for this exciting opportunity to work within a large, dynamic trials unit looking after haemato-oncology patients. It is a 1-year fixed term post on the Early Phase Cancer Trials Unit (EPCTU) in the Department of Oncology and Haematology.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be responsible for the day-to-day management of patients with haematological malignancy (with a focus on myeloid) on the Early Phase Cancer Trials Unit and take part in the clinical and academic myeloid service. There will be an opportunity to develop research projects in clinical trials and translational science, and training will focus on the design, setting up and execution of clinical research.

Job responsibilities

Clinical and Research Responsibilities:

  • Inpatient and outpatient care of haematological cancer patients being treated as part of trials performed on the EPCTU and selected trials being run through the late phase trials team. The focus will be on AML and myeloid trials although will work collaboratively with the other haematological malignancy trials fellows and cross cover would be expected.
  • Co-ordination and execution of trial activities for EPCTU, including (but not limited to) study specific investigations, sample collection and handling, data collection, case record folder completion, maintenance of study documentation;
  • Liaison with a laboratory group to gain familiarity with the endpoint assays associated with the trial. There will also be opportunities to gain experience in performing laboratory techniques associated with a translational project, although the principal focus of the fellow will be on clinical aspects.
  • Under supervision, to undertake the setting up of clinical trials, including protocol design, grant applications, regulatory and ethical submissions, liaison with clinical trials units and preparation of study specific documentation.
  • Preparation of results for publication.

Person Specification

Professional Qualifications/Training

Essential

  • MB ChB or equivalent. MRCP or equivalent

Desirable

  • FRCPath Postgraduate qualification
  • Holder of a national training number in haematology or medical oncology, or equivalent

Work Experience

Essential

  • 3 years full time hospital service Core medical training for at least 2 years
  • Demonstrable ability to exercise an immediate level of clinical responsibility as delegated by the consultant-in-charge

Desirable

  • Direct experience of managing haemato-oncology patients
  • Training at registrar level in Haematology / Oncology
  • Post-foundation hospital appointments in oncology and/or haematology

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Ability to work effectively within a multiprofessional team.
  • Excellent organisational, communication, professional and personal skills.
  • Experience of teaching undergraduates and trainees
  • Evidence of effective participation in clinical audit and risk management.
  • Evidence of active interest and / or involvement in clinical research trials.

Desirable

  • Training in research conduct, including ICH-GCP
  • Computing skills: ability to use word processor, spreadsheet programme and web browser.
  • Publication of research.
