Radiology at Alder Hey has 4 Ultrasound rooms, 3 Radiology, 1 Fluoroscopy, a Standing spine set, DEXA, SPECT CT, CT, 1.5 MR, and 3T Intra op MR. There are 4 GA lists a week but also access to IR and Fluoro for 2 non-GA session per week. The department has a shared neuro interventional list once a month with the adult neuro IR's. There is capacity to increase this with ongoing recruitment and service expansion. Interventional Radiology in Alder Hey involves general paediatric interventional radiology and supports Alder Hey's wide range of tertiary and quaternary services.

Alder Hey is a centre for management of vascular malformations and is one of two UK Vein of Galen Embolization centres.

The range of IR offered at Alder Hey supports the running of this large paediatric hospital including, Biopsies, Drainages, Feeding Tubes, Embolisation, Airway Stenting and Tumour Ablation. IR in Alder Hey is forward thinking and encourages any successful candidate to introduce new techniques and procedures to enhance patient care and experience. Currently IR does not provide the main venous access service but does provide a bespoke difficult IV access to individual patients and supports the nurse lead IV access team when required.

Main duties of the job

This appointment is for a Paediatric Interventional Consultant Radiologist, with the general workload primarily in plain radiography, ultrasound and cross-sectional Imaging.

Interventional Radiology in Alder Hey involves general paediatric interventional radiology and supports Alder Hey's wide range of tertiary and quaternary services.

Alder Hey is a centre for management of vascular malformations and is one of two UK Vein of Galen Embolization centres. This post will work alongside the lead Interventional Radiologist to support all IR work, with a view to expanding the range of IR offered. Alder Hey itself is a 309 bed paediatric trauma centre. The radiology department performs in excess of 75,000 examinations per annum and is well supported by regular anaesthetic cover.

You will be expected to work flexibly according to changes in work patterns and requirements and will be required to participate in the consultant on-call rota (1:10 on call), there is no separate IR on-call rota. Prospective cover of annual and study leave is in place.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES (detail below)

All Radiologists participate in an agreed Team Job Plan allowing for prospective (cross) cover for core modalities.

An outline of a typical weekly timetable of programmed activities is as follows, but this will be flexible depending on service needs, the availability of other staff, and the special interests of the appointee.

At least 8.5 sessions of DCC to ideally include:

2.5 sessions in a dedicated IR Angiosuite (2 GA lists, with pre and post op assessment included)

1 A flexible session for cross cover of IR

1 session for non-theatre IR fluoroscopy

1 session for general on call

3 sessions for diagnostic work (plain radiography, US, CT, MR)

A minimum of 1.5 SPAs is offered for personal revalidation and mandatory training.

TEACHING

There will be opportunities to participate actively in training the rotating Specialist Registrars in Radiology, and in Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching.

Dr. Krishna Harave is the Clinical Tutor for the department.

Dr Alexandra Williams is the Tutor for Undergraduate students.

AUDIT AND CLINICAL GOVERNANCE

The department has an ongoing audit programme which selectively covers various aspects of paediatric radiology. Presentations are made within the department from time to time and in addition, to the hospital wide audit programme. All members of the department are encouraged to be actively involved in audit.

There is a regular READ meeting lead by Dr Taylor Robinson.

Dr Ranil Fernando is the Consultant with special responsibility for audit.

THE DEPARTMENT

The purpose-built Hospital in the Park was completed in 2015.

The Department of Radiology is on the ground floor of the hospital. It currently has three Philips general DR rooms, one Philips C Arm fluoroscopy suite, an ultrasound suite with 4 Philips Ultrasound machines, a Philips 64 slice spiral C.T. scanner, a Philips 1.5T M.R. scanner, a Hologic bone densitometer, a Planmeca Cone Beam CT OPG, an EOS 2D/3D erect scanner and a Radionuclide Imaging Department with a Siemens SPECT CT.

On site, within the Theatre complex, there is a Philips 3T intraoperative MRI scanner, two Philips bi-plane suites one for Vascular Intervention and one for Cardiac work. A Siemens Zeego Hybrid Theatre is also in the theatre complex primarily for spinal work but also for combined complex IR/Surgical cases. A portable ultrasound is exclusively available for IR use.

Cover is also provided for imaging at the neonatal unit at Liverpool Women's Hospital (LWH).

Patient Archiving and Communication System installed and active since June 2007. Our PACS provider is Carestream, and we are part of a North West Cluster of 13 hospitals that share a Global worklist. This runs in conjunction with CRIS radiology reporting system with voice activated dictation (Dragon).

There are 14 reporting workstations, including 3 in the registrars room. There are a number of shared offices for the Consultant Radiologists and a seminar room with conference facilities. All consultants have been provided with a home working Kit.

The department has an excellent and close working relationship with the surrounding adult centres, particularly with the Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery, the Liverpool Foundation Trust (incorporating the Royal Liverpool Hospitals, Aintree Hospital) and the Liverpool Heart and Chest hospital. This allows seamless transitional care, collaborative working and a collegiate approach to patient care throughout the Mersey region and the wider North West of England.

The radiology department is widely considered to be one of the friendliest and supportive environments to work in in the region and regularly scores top in trainee assessments. The department has an excellent mix of youth and experience and is frequently represented in National and International meetings.
