Job summary

We are looking for a Practitioner Psychologist or an accredited CBT therapist to come and work in our dynamic renal health and counselling psychology service and support novel renal transformation initiatives. We are looking for someone who can work within our renal multidisciplinary team of dietitians, physiotherapists, pharmacists, surgeons and nurses to improve equity to and the quality of our renal services.

They work on our new pilot Kidney Fitness for Transplantation (K-FiT) weight loss clinics, most of whom will be prescribed the weight loss drug Semaglutide.They will also input to our other renal improvement workstreams to ensure patients receive psychologicalsupport to explore the barriers to undertaking specific home treatments, including supporting decision-making toensure patients receive dialysis treatments most appropriate for them.

The post-holder will be embedded within the renal clinical speciality whilst belonging to a group of over 40 psychological therapies, neuropsychology and counselling (PTNC) staff who work within a variety of medical specialities.

Main duties of the job

To conduct specialist biopsychosocial assessments to determine suitability for the K-FiT programme and provide a brief package of tailored psychological, motivational and supportive interventions to a limited number of individuals with kidney disease and obesity, who will also be prescribed the weight-loss medication Semaglutide (Ozempic). To contribute to K-FiT MDT meetings and offer specialist psychological advice and consultation on managing weight loss to non-psychologist colleagues. To contribute to the renal dialysis, pre-dialysis and frailty MDTs to offer advice, guidance and psychological assessment and support to patient decision-making around home dialysis. To contribute to the collection and analysis of individual outcome data from interventions and utilise skills for research and audit purposes as required. To support the work of the Renal Health and Counselling Psychology (RHCP) service including offering minimal cross-service support to ward patients.

The post-holder will need to work Mondays and Fridays, with flexibility to agree the remaining hours of the post.

Experience

  • Experience of working as a qualified / trainee clinical / counselling psychologist / practitioner health psychologist and/or CBT therapist
  • Experience of specialist biopsychosocial assessment and delivery of psychological and / or motivational interventions with patients in primary care, community, or acute hospital settings
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of patient groups, presenting with a range of clinical severity across a range of care settings including outpatient and/or community and/or primary care, and/or in-patient settings and maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems
  • Experience of undertaking risk assessments
  • Experience of work within interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary environments
  • Experience of working with individuals from ethnically diverse backgrounds

Desirable

  • Clinical experience in assessment and working psychologically with patients with obesity in a community and/or acute hospital setting
  • Experience within renal, liver or diabetes health settings

Skills & Aptitudes

Essential

  • Knowledge of and ability to implement behaviour change techniques and interventions as applied to healthy eating and physical exercise
  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention, and management, including the use of theoretical models to analyse information and to develop formulations
  • Ability to communicate effectively at both a written and oral level to patients and professional persons within and outside the NHS
  • Ability to act as a practitioner psychologist / CBT therapist and work autonomously in hospital settings
  • High level knowledge of psychology research design and methodology within physical health settings
