Job summary

This permanent Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist vacancy consists of 15 hours: Priory Special School Bury St Edmunds (SACN) & 22.5 hours: Specialist Units attached to mainstream schools and settings (M/S) in Bury St Edmunds and wider surrounding geographical area.

The SACN role includes providing therapy, advice & assessment to children & young people with moderate/severe learning disabilities in their educational setting, post 16 work & home visits may also be required. The specialist units and settings role will require working in a range of Reception / KS1 and KS2 units and taking a lead role in the management of SLT for units in the West of the county.

We work collaboratively to upskill and empower therapy partners, delivering workshops for schools, parents and carers, and working alongside SLT colleagues. We promote neuro-affirmative working.

Previous experience of managing CYP with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and training others is essential. An interest in coaching and supervision would be advantageous.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will:

- Manage caseloads as a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist in special schools and specialist units, to ensure equity of offer and best practice.

- Collaborate with existing therapy team members to provide a joined-up service.

- Work with children with a broad range of speech, language and communication needs.

- Provide assessment and plan/deliver therapy interventions.

- Deliver face-to-face sessions to individual and groups of children.

- Design and support delivery of training packages to educational staff (face to face and virtual).

- Work closely with families, educational staff and other professionals to support effective outcomes for children and young people.

- Work specifically with staff to promote and embed communication strategies.

- Take part in the Annual Review process, writing AR reports and attending meetings where possible.

- Build or maintain relationships with staff and be a point of contact for them.

Education & Qualification

Essential

  • oRecognised Speech & Language therapy degree qualification
  • oRegistered with the Health & Care Professions Council
  • oMember of the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists
  • oEvidence of continuing professional development via RCSLT log or portfolio

Desirable

  • oMember of a Clinical Excellence Network
  • oEvidence of further post graduate short courses or training relevant to clinical caseload: Makaton, PECS, SCERTS, stammering approaches, Nuffield, Intensive Interaction, Attention Autism, Eating/Drinking etc
  • oRecent Placement Educator Training

Experience

Essential

  • oExperience and working knowledge of Paediatrics as specialist area
  • oKnowledge and experience of a wide range of paediatric SLC assessment methods
  • oKnowledge and experience of using a range of paediatric therapy techniques and approaches to a specialist level
  • oExperience of working with other professionals including parents, education staff and health professionals
  • oKnowledge and experience of managing the impact of a SLCN difficulty for the Child or young person and their family / carers
  • oUse of outcome measures
  • oExperience of training others
  • oSupervision of junior staff and students
  • oSupporting others with caseload management

Desirable

  • oPrevious Band 6 experience or evidence of working at a specialist level
