Job summary

As one of the largest and most ambitious Trusts in England, MFT has an exciting new leadership opportunity as we're looking for a Commercial Director.

Reporting to the Trust Chief Finance Officer, this role will provide strategic commercial leadership to the Trust, developing the Trust's Commercial Strategy and working collaboratively with a broad range of staff across MFT, maximising any opportunities to improve performance from any services or contracts and delivering improved outcomes for the Trust. This role will also drive, encourage, and develop innovation and entrepreneurial thinking across the organisation nurturing external relationships for the benefit of MFT and the NHS more broadly.

This new role will hold specific responsibilities to identify and follow through on entrepreneurial activities that would benefit patients and the Trust more broadly. This will involve identifying new approaches to the way we work and engage with staff and stakeholders. This comes at an opportune moment following the launch of our organisational strategy and multi-year financial recovery plan and offers you the chance to achieve amazing work in one of the most vibrant and ambitious Trusts in England.

Main duties of the job

With recent and relevant experience as a Commercial Director in a large/complex organisation, you will lead develop and maintain productive collaborative working relationships with members of the Executive Committee, Clinical Group Senior Leadership Teams and other senior staff. You will be established in delivering consistently, developing commercial opportunities and partnerships, as you will work with colleagues internally to identify potential areas for commercial development, developing resilience in existing services and identifying market opportunities to develop new services.

Using your exemplar interpersonal skills and personal credibility, you will provide highly visible leadership and act as a senior ambassador for MFT externally, both within the UK and abroad helping to drive new and existing business opportunities. Achievement focused, with the ability to set targets and get things done to achieve continuous improvement, you will have overall responsibility for the financial performance of commercial services and you will help negotiate and manage all contracts relating to commercial activities.

Qualifications - Academic/Professional

Essential

  • General education to degree level or equivalent work experience operating at Master level.
  • Second degree/master's level qualification in a related subject or equivalent knowledge, training, and experience.
  • Track record of recent and relevant continuous development.

Skills, Knowledge Requirements & Experience - Strategic Leadership

Essential

  • Recent and relevant experience as a Commercial Director in a complex organisation.
  • Successful track-record of delivering market intelligence by horizon scanning to identify / develop potential new areas for growth.
  • A proven ability to deliver consistently in developing commercial opportunities and partnerships.
  • A track-record of leading programmes to create income generation and attract capital investment including leading the development of successful bids, tenders and business cases of scale.
  • A commitment to system and organisational excellence.
  • A commitment to close working with health and social care partners in Manchester.
  • Understanding of the implications of working in a complex landscape, involving health, academic, industrial and regulatory bodies and an ability to take the lead in effective risk management.
  • A solid and evident understanding of NHS dynamics and the values of the UK public sector.
