We are seeking an enthusiastic, forward thinking and motivated nurse to join this busy, tri-site service. Imperial College NHS Trust is a tertiary referral centre for Upper GI malignancies for North West London. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to join the Team and to gain expert experience and enhanced knowledge of OG cancer management in secondary care and develop key advanced CNS skills in an environment supported by an experienced nursing and multiprofessional team. This post will mainly focus on Early Cancer and Post operative patients althought the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with patients throughout the whole pathway.

You will work autonomously but will be supported by a team of CNSs and other MDT members delivering an exceptional standard of nursing care for patients and their families throughout the cancer patient pathway. You will further develop skills enabling you to practice at an advanced clinical level, both in your own clinical practice and as a role model to others as an UGI cancer Key Worker.

Working with the Upper GI cancer CNS team, you will initiate and support Service development and improve patient experience based on emerging and best practice models of care which is responsive to patient feedback and audit findings.

You will be expected to play a leading role in ensuring the team comply with local and national policy, clinical governance and Peer review.

You will work collaboratively with referring GPs and all members of the extended multidisciplinary team including; imaging departments, medical and surgical consultants, clinical nurse specialists, research teams, acute oncology, specialist palliative care, ward nursing teams and administrative teams.

Integral to you your role, you will support the educational needs of staff working in the medical, surgical and oncology departments to ensure you and your team's expertise has maximum impact.

As a band 7 you will be expected to meet the essential criteria, possess the relevant post registration experience as outlined in the person specification.

Main duties of the job

  • To Provide specialist nursing advice and support to patients in Upper GI particularly with OG tumours and facilitate high quality, individualised care to patients/clients and relatives/carers, both inpatients and outpatients, without supervision in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team in line with local and national targets.
  • The post holder will provide specialist nursing care within the surgical and oncology setting and support and deputise for their line manager in the management of their clinical speciality. This will involve dealing with complex situations and having to take appropriate action in a variety of settings.
  • To be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and to provide cover for any area specified acting as professional role model providing direct and indirect clinical care, teaching and research.
  • To develop the clinical nurse specialist role in accordance with local and national policy and ensure the needs of patients and their families are central to service improvement initiatives.

Person Specification

EDUCATION

Essential

  • NMC registration and a degree in related subject.
  • Post registration qualification(s) in speciality or relevant subject (Cancer, palliative care or gastroenterology/hepatology)
  • Recognised teaching qualification or demonstratable teaching experience

Desirable

  • Recognised physical assessment module at level 7
  • Leadership course

SKILLS/ ABILITIES

Essential

  • In depth knowledge of speciality and use of evidence-based practice
  • Excellent organisational skills and advanced ICT skills, including Microsoft office
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team

Desirable

  • Ability to design and deliver education programmes

EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Relevant and substantial post registration experience at band 6 or above to speciality
  • Experience of working as a Clinical Nurse Specialist.
  • Experience of audit and service development

Desirable

  • Experience of leading and managing
