Job summary

We are looking for a midwife to specialise in Perinatal Mortality Reviews with the use of the Perinatal Mortality Review Tool (PMRT) who is motivated and dynamic, who has an ability to help to promote a culture of safety and learning from clinical understanding and evidence based practice within Maternity.

This midwife will be the specialist in the use of the PMRT resource designed to help clinicians to review the circumstances and care leading up to and surrounding late fetal loss, stillbirth and neonatal death in a systematic way; identifying any sub-optimal care factors whilst developing and embedding action within formal actions plans to mitigate these sub-optimal care factors. Ultimately this specialist midwife will provide parents with information about potential reasons why their baby died through the reports generated through the PMRT resource.

The successful applicant will need to have excellent IT skills, along with great communication, and presentation skills.

Main duties of the job

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Data entry of all perinatal deaths eligible for MBBRACE/PMRT
  • Presentation of cases and learning at directorate meetings
  • Ensure review by Multidisciplinary team of all eligible cases
  • Be a point of contact for the bereaved parents and ensure their feedback is taken into consideration as part of case reviews
  • Be the liaison with other units to promote external review of cases
  • To share learning from PMRT findings at MDT meetings
  • To monitor actions from MDT findings
  • To audit and analyse data from the PMRT resource, including writing quarterly reports
  • To ensure compliance with CNST action 1, regarding reporting timeframes

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered midwife
  • Degree or evidence of equivalent study

Desirable

  • Experience of using PMRT
  • MSc degree
  • Post-mortem consent trained

Knowledge and understanding

Essential

  • Awareness and understanding of current national and local midwifery issues with regards to pregnancy loss
  • Knowledge and understanding of current issues that relate to PMRT and the external review processes
  • An understanding of the NMC Code of Practice and Midwives Rules
  • An understanding of confidentiality
  • An understanding of the needs of clients in a multi-racial, inner city environment
  • An interest in improving the standards of care
  • An understanding of all aspects of evidence based midwifery practice
  • Understanding of National bereavement pathway framework
  • Understanding of Child Protection

Desirable

  • Understand systems of team approach in midwifery
  • Understanding the change process when embedding learning

Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrate an understanding of research based midwifery care
  • Proven experience post midwifery qualification

Desirable

  • Experience with case presentations
  • Has been involved in midwifery related research
  • Appreciation of counselling skills
