Hours: 37.5 hrs per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

The Diagnostic Imaging service at Milton Keynes University Hospital provides a breast screening (NHSBSP) and symptomatic imaging service for the population of Milton Keynes. This is delivered from both the static breast unit and mobile screening unit locations.

It is an exciting time to join the breast imaging team following the re-design of the unit, which has seen the installation of a third room with tomosynthesis and CESM and CESM biopsy and a newly designed staff hub.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a qualified mammographer to join our friendly multidisciplinary team. You will be a proactive team member who is willing to take on responsibility when required.

A flexible approach to the needs of the department is essential as there is a requirement for evening and possible weekend work.

You will be a HCPC registered Radiographer and hold a UK regulated level 7 postgraduate qualification.

Please note that if your qualification is from overseas, you will need to provide a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability confirming that your qualification is equivalent to a level 7postgraduate qualification. Due to the nature of the role and to encourage women of all cultures and religions in our community to access breast screening all applicants must be female. This is deemed to be an occupational requirement in accordance with the Equality Act 2010, schedule 9, paragraph 1 and the Employment Statutory Code of Practices, Chapter 13, paragraphs 13.5-13.

To work as part of the Breast Care Unit multidisciplinary team providing a breast screening and symptomatic service for the population of Milton Keynes. This will include duties both on the Mobile Screening Unit and the Breast Care Unit in Milton Keynes Hospital, and will also include use of dedicated computer systems.

Job description

Job responsibilities

This role involves working alongside assistant practitioners, supervising, and mentoring as required.

To perform high quality diagnostic breast imaging to demonstrate or exclude breast cancer on all women attending the symptomatic or breast screening services, whilst maintaining a high standard of patient care.

As a Senior Mammographer, youwill be expected to lead by example and work independently in accordance with departmental Standard Operating procedures and be accountable for your own actions, liaising with the Breast Imaging Service Manager, as necessary.

When working in the mobile screening unit you will be the lead specialist for breast screening, provide advice and assistance to colleagues as required.

  • Participate in the Breast Imaging Services staff rotation both on the Mobile Unit and at the Breast Care Unit and undertake all associated admin and clinical duties as required.
  • To transport clinic paperwork and other consumable items to and from distant sites in accordance with Caldicott principals and local guidelines.
  • To work autonomously within own specialist area, consulting senior staff as and when necessary and will be accountable for own professional actions.
  • Work swiftly and efficiently so that breast screening lists are completed in the allocated time and ensuring that Technical Repeat rates conform to NHSBSP standards of less than 3%.
  • To be responsible for the safe use of all digital mammographic equipment and its peripheries.
  • To be able to adapt mammography positioning technique according to client/patient requirements/limitations.
  • Apply in-depth knowledge of anatomy and pathology to determine appropriate imaging techniques.
  • To be able to advise on additional views when required in line with professional knowledge.
  • To be competent in undertaking assessment of mammography images and interventional procedures using the stereotactic biopsy equipment.
  • To have knowledge of aseptic technique for assisting with interventional procedures and have the ability to dress wounds and give advice on aftercare.
