We have an opportunity for a full-time Specialty Doctor to shape services at Cygnet Hospital Beckton while being fully supported by a Consultant Psychiatrist and first-class multidisciplinary team.

Please note this is a Fixed Term Contract for 3 months initially with a scope of extension.

Cygnet Hospital Beckton is situated in the East End of London and has four different specialist wards including mental health with learning disability, personality disorder and an acute admissions service.

This role will be based on Svanna ward, our new 12 bed PICU service for women. The service will accept emergency and crisis admissions from all areas including acute wards and forensic services.

Our aim is a short, rapid intervention to help individuals to regain a sense of control and order in their lives, so they can move to a less restrictive care setting and, ultimately, return home.

Main duties of the job

The CQC recognised that the specialist wards meet the needs of all service users including those with a protected characteristic saying staff helped service users with communication, advocacy and cultural and spiritual support.

We accept emergency and planned, pre-assessed admissions. Our aim is to support individual service user recovery and integration back into the community, as quickly as possible. We have a multi-disciplinary team of specialists and offer a very broad range of therapies.

Your role responsibilities

  • Provide high quality treatment under the direction of a Consultant Psychiatrist
  • Assess referrals & undertake mental state examinations of service users
  • Participate in weekly ward rounds & attend multidisciplinary meetings
  • Attend Care Programme Approach & Section 117 meetings & mental health review tribunals
  • Provide up-to-date clinical information at all meetings
  • Ensure that medical decisions are implemented as planned
  • Audit medical services & ensure compliance with GMC & other professional guidelines
  • Uphold policies & procedures and contribute to service governance & development
  • Participate in 1:6 On call Rota

We are looking for someone who is...

  • Fully GMC registered & MBBS (or equivalent) qualified
  • Able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Knowledgeable of mental health legislation & codes of practice
  • An excellent clinical decision maker, with sound judgement & ability to manage risk
  • A first-rate communicator who can interview, assess & treat patients & write clear, comprehensive medical notes
  • Committed to continued professional development
  • Preferably approved under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act & a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, or equivalent

Our CESR programme

This programme will help you develop the skills you need to progress to Consultant level and youll rotate within wards/services to gain valuable experience across various subspecialties.

Youll also have an educational supervisor to review your progress and oversee your development and youll receive support with MRCPsych exams.
