Job summary

We are excited to advertise the newly created post of a Clinical Specialist Sickle Cell Disorder (SCD) Physiotherapist. This innovative post will join a newly developed community multidisciplinary team (MDT) and service to support patients, families and carers affected by sickle cell disorder across South East London, covering the six boroughs of Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham, Greenwich, Bexley and Bromley.

This post will be working as part of a newly established multidisciplinary team (MDT) consisting of: Clinical Nurse Specialists, Psychologist, Dietician, Pharmacist and Welfare Support Advisors dedicated to management of children and adults with SCD in South East London.

Whilst the role shall be hosted and based at Guy's and St Thomas', the post holder will be expected to work across a variety of settings. The role will involve travel across the South East London footprint and candidates must demonstrate a willingness to support service users across all boroughs, including with face to face or virtual appointments.

It is a fantastic opportunity for a physiotherapist who is interested in working with both children and adults and would like experience in developing and working with a brand-new innovative service.

Main duties of the job

This new service forms part of a two-year pilot within South East London, focused on improvements in community services to support patients, families and carers affected by sickle cell disorder. Therefore, the MDT will also need to work closely with the project team, made up of a wide range of stakeholders including the South East London Integrated Care System and South East London and South East Haemoglobinopathy Co-ordinating Centre, attend meetings relating to the delivery of the pilot, and support reporting and target requirements, including to the London Sickle Cell Improvement Programme Board and NHSE as and when required.

As part of the Sickle Cell MDT, the Physiotherapist will be responsible for the operational management of the physiotherapy service and developing and providing Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation interventions to patients with Sickle Cell Disease to help maintain good health and to recover from episodes of illness. Key aspects to the role will involve working in collaboration with the newly developed Sickle Cell MDT to map and acknowledge the existing strengths, knowledges and resources within the Sickle Cell Community, to identify physiotherapy and rehabilitation needs for patients with Sickle Cell Disease and develop personalised physiotherapy rehabilitation and educational interventions for patients with sickle cell disease.

The Physiotherapy Department is within the Therapies Clinical Directorate, and has over 270 staff providing services across the Trust to the frontline directorates at Guys, St Thomas' and Evelina Children's hospitals as well as Local Community Health services.

You will be professionally linked to the GSTT Adult Rehabilitation Services (Cancer and Haematology Physiotherapy Service) and supported by Clinical Consultant and Clinical specialist Physiotherapists. There is a strong ethos within the team of supporting each other, with access to reflective practice, learning spaces and Trust wellbeing initiatives. You will also be working collaboratively and gain support from the Sickle Cell Disease MDT in the region which cover paediatric and adult services.
