The role sits within the Brain Injury Services (BIS) physiotherapy team, providing level 1 rehabilitation and complex disability management for adults with acquired brain injury. BIS holds two clinical pathways of complex neuro-rehabilitation and Prolonged Disorders of Consciousness (PDoC). The post holder will work as an integral part of the interdisciplinary team. They will be supported by senior specialist Physiotherapists and have opportunities to offer support and supervision to Physiotherapy and/or Therapy Assistants and Physiotherapy Students.

Main duties of the job

  • Demonstrate an awareness of the RHNs values and objectives and contribute to them within you daily practice.
  • To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of your work in line with standards set by the HCPC, Physiotherapy profession and the RHN.
  • To work within an Inter-disciplinary team to provide seamless patient value centred care, disability management and rehabilitation treatment.
  • To provide a high standard of Physiotherapy as an autonomous practitioner including; conducting complex patient assessments, formulations of problem lists and treatment plans and provision of Physiotherapy treatment encompassing patients values and goals.
  • To demonstrate the ability to reflect and develop clinical reasoning, using evidence informed knowledge, to support with treatment planning and development within your caseload.
  • Proactively participate in own development through regular supervision with senior Physiotherapists, peer learning, engagement in departmental training and CPD opportunities and fully participate in the RHN annual Individual Performance Review processes. Successful applicants will access the RHN band 5 learning framework to guide their individual learning and development plan during their employment at the RHN.
  • Act as a role model to colleagues and consistently display the highest standards of professionalism.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical and Organisational

  • To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of your work, including the management of patients in your care, upholding professional standards and code of conduct.
  • To carry out Physiotherapy assessments, formulate prognoses, goal planning, develop and implement treatment plans and support discharge planning.
  • Be responsible for organising and planning own caseload to meet service and patient needs.
  • Carry out clinical and non-clinical tasks as delegated by Senior Physiotherapist, Clinical Lead Physiotherapist or Head of Therapy.
  • Aware of and demonstrate knowledge of safeguarding vulnerable adults within clinical practice.
  • Ability to assess capacity and work within legal frameworks when working with people who may lack the capacity to consent to treatment.
  • Demonstrate understanding of clinical governance and risk management and how this applies to work situations.
  • Accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients to treat with effective time management and resource use.
  • Use reflection and clinical reasoning skills within your practice to evaluate and progress patient progress.
  • Maintain accurate, up to date and comprehensive clinical records in line with legal, professional, contractual and RHN requirements.
  • To have an awareness of and work within national and local clinical guidelines.

  • Effectively communicate patient status, progress and discharge requirements with external agencies through written forms (ie reports and letters).

  • To be proactive in seek support from senior clinicians in the immediate working team in a timely manner outside of structured supervision pathways.

Management and Personal Development

  • Be an active member of the Physiotherapy in-service programme and participate in peer review.
  • Be responsible for maintaining own CPD portfolio (as per HCPC and CSP requirements) and actively engage in the annual IPR process at the RHN.
  • To ensure your own practice meets the required professional standards of the physiotherapy profession.
  • To supervise and delegate to Physiotherapy assistants, therapy assistants and Physiotherapy students as appropriate.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times and be aware of information governance responsibilities.
  • Maintain and develop current knowledge of evidence informed practice in area of work
  • Undertake measurement and evaluation of your own work and current practice through audit, evidence based projects and outcome measures.
  • Contribute recommendations for improving service quality and be actively involved in its implementation.
  • To demonstrate reliability, flexibility, calmness under pressure and self-motivation.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Qualification in Physiotherapy recognised by the Health Care Professions Council.
  • Registered member of the HCPC, membership of CSP or own public liability insurance.
  • Post-registration experience of working in Neurological care and/or rehabilitation.

Desirable

  • IT skills relevant to job role.

Experience

Essential

  • Broad range of pre-registration clinical physiotherapy experience including neurological rehabilitation.
  • Demonstrate the ability to carry out neurological assessment and treatment, working closely with the Inter-disciplinary team to establish patient-values and goals.
  • Ability to prioritise and manage a caseload, recognising boundaries, and seeking support when appropriate.
  • Evidence of working well in a team, with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Evidence of participation in continued professional development including demonstrating a keen interest in neurological physiotherapy with an understanding of the need for evidence informed practice and service development.
  • Experience in splinting, wheelchair assessment, postural management and spasticity management.
  • Awareness and understanding of supporting equality and valuing diversity
  • Experience of delegation and supervision of qualified physiotherapy staff, support staff and students.
