We are a friendly, supportive team, dedicated to delivering outstanding patient-centred care within our 22 bedded unit based at the John Radcliffe Hospital. We are a nationally renowned centre for specialities such as Trauma; Vascular; Spinal; Orthopaedics, Specialist Surgery, emergency acute surgery and medicine.

We are now looking for an exceptional Band 7 to join our leadership team for a 12 month secondment to cover maternity leave. You will be an experienced critical care nurse with experience of operational management/bed management and be able to make decisions as well and navigate problems when they arise. You will work clinically, maintaining excellent standards of patient care. You will have strong interpersonal skills and be able to develop sound professional relationships across the whole MDT. You will have a passion to drive through change and confident in leading new quality improvement initiatives across the unit, particularly relating to the Liver and Gastro areas of speciality.

As a Band 7 you will effectively manage and lead a team, ensuring the team are supported, developed and nurtured allowing the unit to 'grow its own'.

The successful applicant will work as a clinical band 7 on OCC, providing high standards of care to the critically ill patients of Oxfordshire, and daily operational management of the service, along with the Churchill ICU. The non-clinical work associated with this post will involve quality improvement projects for Liver and Gastro care, networking with the Gastro and surgical teams and services. Close collaboration with the rest of the senior nurse team will be required, to ensure best practice and care standards are met.

Job responsibilities

Manage a clinical team, daily operational and staffing management, leading on the nursing initiatives (education/training/research) with regards to the specialities of Neuro/Spinal and Trauma within the department.

To promote and demonstrate contemporary and proactive approaches to intensivecare nursing practice and in collaboration with education links facilitate theadvancement of this practice.Take responsibility for the strategic leadership of a Clinical Team.Work with the Matron to manage strategic planning for OCC/CICU, taking operationalresponsibility for the effective utilisation of relevant intensive care resources.Collaborate with the multi-professional team and provide direction and example forprofessional nursing practice.

Clinical practice and Research:

Managerial / Leadership and Audit:

Takes responsibility for operational management of the OCCCICU.Management of staff and resources across the OCC/CICU site.Participates in multi-disciplinary decision making via the daily bed meeting to facilitate elective admissions and discharges.In collaboration with other senior nurses, develops the OCC/CICU operational and organisational structure to optimise the service.Actively participates in the collaborative approach to strategic planning that ensures the OCC/CICU service plan accounts for patient and service needs.Directs supports and facilitates any team and unit project work.Contributes to local research and to practice development.Contributes to on-going development and achievement of individual team members to promote potential.Facilitates feedback to individuals through performance review and clinicalsupervision to fulfil individual and unit needs.Facilitates and develops communication channels within the multi-professional team.

Clinical Governance:In collaboration with the senior team ensure that education / training standards set locally and nationally within the clinical governance framework are implemented, achieved, and monitored.In collaboration with the senior team ensure all trust policies / procedures are implemented.To keep informed of current research and development and disseminate information as appropriate.To ensure that implementation and audit of current research-based practice is undertaken.Promote the adult critical care service-based quality initiatives.Monitor standards of care and quality of service through assessment of the care providers.Evaluate and audit the educational programme within the adult intensive care service.Contribute to the appraisal process regarding the educational needs of individual staff.Participate in response to untoward incidents, ensuring facilitation of education / training needs arising from the incident.Monitor and report staff compliance of statutory and mandatory training and appraisal requirements.
