Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Data Management Services department for a Lead Database Administrator. This role would be suitable for a database administrator who is looking to further progress their career or, existing senior database administrators wanting to work with data at a very large scale, in order to help improve outcomes for patients and support the wider NHS.

The post holder will contribute to the performance of Database Operations, the wider IT Services community and SCW by actively engaging with peers. They will also need to understand and comply with existing RDBMS strategies.

Main duties of the job

The holder of the role will be expected to support the Database Operations Team and as such must have knowledge and experience of the following:

Working with SQL Server 2008 upwards

High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for SQL Server

Performance Tuning and Optimization

Backup Solutions

Working with Windows server, including Active Directory

Physical and Virtual Server infrastructure

Best operational practices of a scale environment

  • Strong experience in Database Administration in SQL Server 2008 up to SQL Server 2016

Skills & Capabilities

Essential

  • Experience in Performance Tuning, and Query Optimization
  • Experience in troubleshooting and resolving database integrity issues, performance issues, blocking and deadlocking issues, replication issues, log shipping issues, connectivity issues, security issues etc.
  • Ability to detect and troubleshoot SQL Server related CPU, memory, I/O, disk space and other resource contention.
  • Strong knowledge of backups, restores, recovery models, database shrink operations, DBCC commands, Clustering, Database mirroring, Replication.
  • Expert experience in implementing operational automation.

Desirable

  • Strong knowledge of how indexes, index management, integrity checks, configuration, patching. How statistics work, how indexes are stored, how they can be created and managed effectively.
  • SQL Development - ability to write and troubleshoot SQL Code and design (Stored procs, functions, tables, views, triggers, indexes, constraints)
  • Solid acquaintance with windows server, security delegation, SPNs, storage components.
