We have exciting opportunities for a number of Senior MSK Physiotherapists to join our friendly, supportive and successful MSK team in County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, one of the largest integrated health providers in the country.

The posts are based at Bishop Auckland Hospital, but may require some days at our community Hospitals at Richardson (Barnard Castle) and also Peterlee.

The iMSK service comprises of Upper & Lower limb, Spinal, A&E, Hand and Rheumatology ESPs, Junior, Senior and Advanced Physiotherapists providing a robust training and supervision framework for all staff.

The post holder has opportunities to develop clinical, supervisory and leadership skills working alongside other Senior and ESP physiotherapists. CPD opportunities are offered which can be tailored to your needs. The post holder will have opportunity for rotation across the MSK service to aid your development and progress in speciality areas. These can include fracture clinic, urgent care, plastics, hydrotherapy and group rehabilitation sessions

Main duties of the job

As a Specialist MSK Physiotherapist, you will be committed to providing evidence based assessment, treatment and rehabilitation. You will manage a caseload where patients are referred from both Primary and Secondary care and include those from the wider MSK Pathway (e.g. our First Contact Practitioners and self-referral pathway. You will work closely with an Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner for support in advancing your clinical skills, knowledge and leadership skills.

CDDFT MSK physiotherapy team has a strong supportive culture for personal and professional development, clinical supervision and opportunities for progression. The post holder will support the clinical education of Physiotherapy students and the development of junior rotational staff alongside supervising Therapy Assistants.

Job responsibilities

As a Senior MSK Physiotherapist in CD_iMSK service you will be providing high quality care to an independent caseload referred with musculoskeletal disorders. The post requires a high quality evidence based assessment, clinically reasoned management, advice and rehabilitation of patients with MSK conditions. You will independently manage a complex caseload of patients referred from Primary care, secondary care and self referrals. The post holder will be required to assist in supervision of junior staff as well as peers within the CD_iMS service.

Within a normal working day you will have Senior and ESP support available to escalate patients for further investigation, injections or to discuss patients as required. Our Physiotherapy intranet site provides you with guidance on all local MSK pathways, protocols and evidence based patient advice leaflets. You will have flexibility within your template to manage your review patients by telephone, face to face or video consultations.

Physiotherapy Assistants are available at every site to support you to rehabilitate patients, you are able to refer for individualised care providing a robust plan or protocol is in place. You will be allocated your own gym time to enable you to access well equipped gyms to rehabilitate individual patients or within a group setting.

CDDFT support protected supervision time which is led by the supervisee for your individual needs. You will have opportunities to assist in service development or quality improvements projects as required.

Shadowing and training is available throughout the service with consultants, A&E, plastics, FCPs in GP practices, ESPs in all specialities, gym rehabilitation and hydrotherapy. This is arranged within your personal development plan. The departments run in-service training sessions together with access to learning on elearning-for-health. All AHP staff within CDDFT are allocated a personal training budget from 2022 to 2025 to access post-graduate training through Teesside University or other approved physiotherapy courses.

CD_iMS use SystmOne for clinical note keeping - training can be provided if you are unfamiliar with this System. CDDFT provide a full induction program which includes mandatory training together with a local physiotherapy induction as well as ICT training tailored to your needs.

Full training for student supervision can be arranged with a local university and you would be supported by colleagues as required.

You will have opportunities to develop leadership skills in conjunction with clinical skills e.g interviewer, appraisal training. CD_iMS encourages all staff to be involved with quality improvement projects and promotes future career opportunities.

The department has a track record for staff wellbeing support following all local CDDFT guidance, you will have access to a well-being hub with the North East & North Cumbria Integrated Care System (NENC ICS and you can be invited to the North East NHS outdoor wellbeing group.

CDIMS are commited to working collaboratively with the NENC ICS reviewing workforce planning and MSK projects.

  • BSc Physiotherapy or equivalent. Continuing Professional Development Diary including evidence of reflective practice, training and clinical experience.

Desirable

  • Recognised relevant academic qualification in relation to MSK conditions. An understanding of County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, its culture, strategic direction, achievements and NHS standing. Appropriate post graduate MSK training

Special Skills & Knowledge

Essential

  • Up to date knowledge of professional practice and new research in management of MSK
  • An understanding of legal responsibilities within the profession. Able to present information, written and orally in a clear and logical manner.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise and work to 18 RTT. Clear ability to manage waiting list pressures. Ability to maintain high levels of concentration and analysis of presenting symptoms from patients.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal. ICT and clinical system skills.
