Job summary

The post holder will be part of the Radiation Protection Service team (RPS Cardiff) that provides Radiation Protection advisory and support services, via Service Level Agreements, to all NHS Trusts in Southeast Wales, to Breast Test Wales at its sites across Wales and to other customers in the private health care sector, universities, industry, etc., throughout Wales and the rest of the UK.

RPS Cardiff performs a wide range of radiation safety activities which are provided by scientific and technical staff. Activities include radiology environmental and equipment checks (including quality assurance assessments and optimisation); X-ray room design; patient radiation dose assessments; instrument calibration; radioactive waste management and delivering training courses. Staff also provide advice on the application of relevant legislation and develop processes and procedures to ensure users comply with these regulations.

This job is based at Velindre Cancer Centre, however travel between RPS Cardiff customer sites across Southeast Wales will be necessary. You may also be required to work from home.

Main duties of the job

  • Take a leading role in all aspects of the routine work of the all-Wales personal radiation dosimetry service, provided through an Approved Dosimetry Service. This includes processing requests for the issue of dosimeters and amendments to existing records, receiving dosimeters, accurate completion of associated records and sending user reports.
  • Take a leading role in the organisation of the RPS Cardiff radiation protection instrument (RPI) testing service, including booking instruments for testing.
  • Perform the legally required periodic testing on all types of RPIs used by RPS Cardiff and our customers and use a database to produce scientific reports.
  • Assist in the booking of QA inspections at RPS Cardiff customer sites as directed by senior Healthcare Science Practitioners (HSP) (clinical technologists).
  • Assist in performing radiation safety and quality assurance surveys on complex patient critical x-ray equipment at RPS Cardiff customer sites, requiring high-precision measurements. Assist in preparing reports of these surveys. For some equipment, carry out these surveys and prepare the reports independently.

Qualifications and Knowlege

Essential

  • Minimum five GCSEs or equivalent to include Maths and English at C / 4 or above.
  • Two A-levels (or equivalent) with significant scientific or mathematical content.

Desirable

  • Level 4 or higher qualification in a subject with significant scientific or mathematical content.
  • A-level (or equivalent) maths or physics.

Experience

Essential

  • Practical experience in a scientific or clinical environment (not necessarily from previous employment).
  • Experience of interacting with a range of people from a variety of backgrounds.

Desirable

  • Use of scientific instrumentation.
  • Use of equipment generating ionising radiation.
  • Radiation dosimetry at diagnostic levels (environmental, personal and patient dosimetry).
  • Working in a radiation environment.
  • Providing administrative support (for example: keeping records, organising and/or minuting meetings).

Skills and Attributes

Essential

  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to liaise effectively with a wide range of other professionals.
  • Familiarity with computing systems and the ability to use Microsoft Office software (particularly Word and Excel) to set up documents and spreadsheets, extract information, calculate results and prepare reports.
  • Able to exercise initiative when dealing with issues within own area of competence.
  • Excellent manual dexterity in the use of sensitive radiation measurement instrumentation.
  • Ability to lift and carry test equipment and phantoms.
  • Full UK driving licence.

  • Motivated, enthusiastic team worker with an ability to work independently.
  • Ability to prioritise own work in order to meet deadlines and achieve efficient use of own time.

  • Basic understanding of the physics of ionising radiation.
