Job summary

We are recruiting for an Associate Vision Science Practictioner to join our Ophthalmic Imaging team at GOSH. The post will involve carrying out a range of ophthalmic imaging investigations in children with simple and/or complex medical conditions. This may include basic (unsupervised) or specialist (supervised) investigations, including but not exclusive to OCT (Spectralis, handheld, ultra-wide field), fundus imaging (Optos, handheld), Biometry (IOL master) and ultrasound.

The post-holder will be expected to contribute and participate in clinical development, audit and research projects involved in the unit under the direction of the ophthalmic imaging lead. Non-clinical workload will vary but will include equipment maintenance, repair, database management, quality assurance/management and contribution to departmental audit or research projects as directed.

Main duties of the job

  • Simple and complex ophthalmic imaging in children, under supervision as required (see full job description for more details), adhering to local or wider standards and protocols.
  • Communication with children and families, sometimes in stressful or upsetting circumstances
  • Perform daily quality and calibration checks on equipment, escalating or resolving faults as required
  • Be responsible for data integrity on imaging systems and patient electronic records (through EPIC).
  • Follow trust policy to carry out duties and responsibilities with care, treating individuals equally and with confidentiality.
  • Maintain a high attention for detail when inputting or contributing to data collection or entry
  • Facilitate general administration within the ophthalmology imaging and wider department, as directed.
  • Attend regular staff meetings and maintain CPD record.
  • Participate in team discussions

Academic/Professional qualification/Training

Essential

  • Extensive experience of ophthalmic care or at last 5 GCSEs to grade C or above (inc core subjects)
  • Extensive experience of ophthalmic care or at least 1 A-level in a science subject grade C or above

Desirable

  • Undergraduate or post-graduate qualifications in a science subject (or equivalent)
  • Participation in clinical research or audit
  • Registration with AHCS, RCCP or HCPC (or working towards registration)
  • Specialist qualifications or accreditation in ophthalmic imaging (i.e. Heidelberg technical, diabetic screening or other)

Experience/Knowledge

Essential

  • Experience with ophthalmic imaging equipment and image acquisition (including image processing)
  • Knowledge of health service practices and understanding of clinical governance

Desirable

  • Basic grounding in sciences
  • Experience of working with children and/or their families
  • Understanding of basic ophthalmic anatomy, physiology and principles of ophthalmic imaging
  • Experience of high volume clinical activity

Skills/Abilities

Essential

  • Able to communicate well with and understand the needs of children and their families and/or carers
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft office, typing, electronic patient records etc.)
  • Good manual dexterity and physical fitness/ability to physically position equipment and patients safely for acquiring specialist images
  • Ability to acquire and process ophthalmic images for clinical and research purposes
  • Excellent problem solving skills (for example, troubleshooting technical issues, artefacts)
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients of all ages who have sensory and/or neurological impairments
  • Ability to deal with difficult patients, families and situations
  • Professional attitude to work and development with respect to continuing professional development
  • Emotionally resilient and able to deal calmly with stressful or emotionally challenging situations

Desirable

  • Attention to detail and an aptitude for collection of imaging data of high quality
  • Able to segment , export and handle images and able to organise and prioritise a busy schedule with a level of autonomy
