Job summary

This post is to provide, develop and expand services including High Dependency Care, Maternal Critical Care, and Gynaecology including Reproductive Medicine, Gynecological Oncology & Robotic Surgeries and Obstetrics provided at the Liverpool Women's Hospital.

Main duties of the job

A core component of this post is a clinical commitment to the Trust's Main Delivery Suite and is intended to provide the appointee with the opportunity of continuing and expanding the obstetric anaesthetic services already established at the Liverpool Women's Hospital. The work on delivery suite encompasses elective and emergency obstetric anesthesia in supporting the busy unit.

It is envisaged that twilight sessions may become necessary in the future and this will be under review.

Close teamwork with anaesthetic, obstetric and midwifery colleagues are essential, as this is a tertiary referral center for complicated obstetric problems. Taking part and developing the high dependency care along with routine obstetric anaesthesia and analgesic tasks is a pleasant and challenging field to teach trainees and develop research active in the department and Trust.

Job description

Job responsibilities

There is a whole day (2 sessions) Gynaecology Oncology list working in a busy and vital area of Gynaecology. Patients of wide age range and fitness require surgical assistance and anaesthetic cares.

Commitment includes a further 2 sessions made up of theatre lists or Preoperative assessment clinic in Gynaecological Surgery at the Liverpool Womens Hospital.

The department expects and promotes good teaching and training for junior anaesthetic staff and the successful appointees will contribute in this area along with providing training for other groups of staff within the Trust.

The on-call commitment will be shared with Consultant Colleagues at LWH, and will be equivalent to 1:12 and attract an availability supplement of 3%.

Supporting professional activity time (SPA) is offered initially as 1.5 PA (6hrs) (I PA on site and 0.5 PA flexible) for purposes of, among others, continuing professional development, enhanced appraisal and revalidation, with further SPAs granted after agreement of a job plan with the Clinical Director and Medical Director.

Essential

  • Able to work within the existing directorate framework and compatibility with all existing consultant staff

  • Experience of supervising anaesthetic trainees

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBChB or equivalent FRCA or equivalent Full GMC registration CCT (or equivalent) with entry on Specialist Register for anaesthesia or within six months of anticipated CCT date on the date of interview
  • Minimum of 7 years' experience in anaesthesia
  • Minimum of 1 year worked within the NHS

Desirable

  • Additional postgraduate training (MRCP, MD etc)
  • Post-Graduate prizes

Experience

Essential

  • Smooth progression through training consistent with personal circumstances
  • Higher level training in obstetric anaesthesia with recent, wide knowledge and experience of high risk obstetric anaesthesia
  • Higher training in general, urological and gynaecological surgery
  • Higher training in day case anaesthesia
  • Minimum of 6 months training in intensive care at ST level
  • ALS

Desirable

  • Advanced level training in obstetric anaesthesia or Evidence of managing Anaesthetic services on a labour ward - including elective/emergency section lists and input into the care of complex parturient
  • Experience with anesthesia for the Robotic Surgeries
  • Advanced level training in general, urological and gynaecological anaesthesia
