CONSULTANT UROLOGISTwith a specialist interest in core Urology, daycase surgery and the surgical management of BPH

We have an exciting opportunity to expand our consultant workforce within the Urology Department at the Leicester General Hospital.

Leicester is one of the largest Urology units in the country, with 14 consultants, 6 specialist registrars, 4 specialty doctors and 14 doctors in training. Our expectation is that over the next 6 months we will have a team of 16 consultant urologists at the Leicester General Hospital. We also have a team of Physician Associates within our service.

We are looking for a consultant urological surgeon with an interest in core urology, Daycase surgery and the surgical management of BPH. The East Midlands Planned Care Centre is due to open at the Leicester General Hospital with theatre and clean room access available from December 2024. This provides an exciting opportunity to ensure we have adequate facilities to continue with our service expansion and will help in the delivery of a more timely service. We already have strong links with our community hospitals and there are opportunities to improve the services we deliver in these units.

The successful candidate will partake in the on-call rota (currently 1:14).

  • Responsible for the management of outpatient, day surgery and in-patients
  • To lead ward rounds, outpatients and theatre activity
  • Perform urological surgery- general urology
  • Outpatient review of patients and assessment of new referrals to the department
  • To undertake diagnostic testing
  • To take part on the one-in-thirteen consultant on- call rota
  • To participate in a management role at an appropriate point
  • To contribute to the strategic planning and service development of the Urology department

  • To provide Consultant Urology services at the University Hospitals of Leicester, with a focus on core urology, daycase surgery and the surgical management of BPH.
  • We have a well-established high volume urology daycase programme along with dedicated clinics to manage patients with core Urology concerns and BPH.
  • There are a number of experienced surgeons in the department and the new appointee will be well supported
  • To ensure the provision of good standards of practice and care, as prescribed in GMC Guidance Duties of a Doctor, at all times; and ensuring that bad practice is reported, as appropriate.
  • To ensure that clinical practice is both effective and efficient and that appropriate monitoring of clinical care takes place.
  • To co-operate in ensuring that services deliver national targets and the local agenda and that the contract is achieved within budget.
  • The Consultant has a continuing responsibility for the care of the patients in their charge and for the proper organisation and functioning of their clinical practice. To achieve this, the post holder will liaise closely with other specialties, departments and outside agencies in contributing to the objectives of the department, CMG & Trust.
  • To take responsibility for ensuring that critical clinical incidents, as defined in the Trusts Critical Incident Policy, are reported either to the Head of Service or Clinical Director or the Medical Director in a timely manner.
