Job summary

50% Research Assistant (UoB): The brain tumour research grouping at the University of Birmingham is a multi-investigator collaborative based across the College of Medical and Dental Sciences. It includes Professors Colin Watts, Daniel Tennant, Matthew Coleman, Andrew Beggs, Jason Parsons and Dr Victoria Wykes. This post is central to the BRAIN STAT (Brain Surgical Tissue for Advanced Tumour models) tissue collection & tissue model derivation pipeline within the brain tumour research grouping at the University of Birmingham. It will catalyse research across the grouping by facilitating sample collection, storage and maintenance of accurate records. The post will create a bank of tissue samples & novel models of brain tumours available to all members of the grouping

50% Physicians Associate Neurosurgery (UHB):

The role works in support of the clinical team providing care across the whole spectrum of patients being treated within the neurosurgery clinical service. You will work under the direction of the supervising Consultant, working collaboratively with members of the multi-disciplinary clinical team within the Trust's policies & clinical guidelines. The job will principally be directed towards clinical & medical support in all areas of the service provision, including both in and out-patients. You will hold a science related degree prior to graduating from an a accredited Physician Assistant training programme, certified by the National Commission on Certification for Physicians Associated

Main duties of the job

50% Research Assistant (UoB):

*Maintain the tissue pipelines between QEHB theatres and UoB labs, Whole Genome Sequencing NHS standard of care pipelines.

*Work with Dr. Victoria Wykes to curate and maintain records of clinical data associated with research studies including BRAIN STAT and BRAIN MATRIX

*Liaise with Lab scientists to regarding brain tumour model development suitable for ongoing research

*Contribute data and the information required for publications arising from use of the materials

*Support Patient and Public Involvement brain tumour research activities through BERTI-West Midlands (Brain tumour Education and Research patient and public Involvement group).

50% Physicians Associate Neurosurgery (UHB):

Levels of supervision will be stipulated according to establishment of 'Scope of Practice' with an initial induction period being undertaken to assess the current level of skill and competence , prior to agreeing the appropriate level of supervision required in different areas of clinical practice.

The post-holder will deliver high quality evidence based clinical care working as part of a designated multi-disciplinary team providing assessment, examination, diagnosis, treatment planning and implementation within an agreed scope of practice.

Qualifications

Essential

  • *Physicians Associate Degree (essential)

Desirable

  • *First degree and Masters (or equivalent experience) in a biological discipline (desired)

Experience

Essential

  • *Knowledge of research and human tissue legislation in the UK is required
  • *Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice standard for clinical research is required
  • *Familiarity with REDCap and Procuro sample tracking software would be desirable
  • *Flexibility to respond to varying demands on time from multiple sources
  • *Demonstrable ability to work collaboratively
  • *Ability to analyse information
  • *Ability to communicate effectively with clinical and science teams and act flexibly and responsibly when last minute changes inevitably occur when working in an NHS surgical environment.
  • *Strong ability to access and organise resources successfully
  • *Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
  • *Experience of PPI in research
  • *Adhere to UHB and UoB Vision and Values, clinical and research governance and risk assessment.
