Job summary

This exciting new opportunity would suit Radiographer with experience of working in busy plain film department and wish to continue with their development in this modality and develop their leadership skills. This position offers the chance to be an integral part of our thriving imaging team and work closely with the Advanced Reporting Radiographer Practitioner team as well as Radiographers, junior staff, Radiologists, nurses, RDAs and HCAs. The role involves supporting the Superintendent Radiographer in the day to day management of the department and acting as the senior Radiographer in their lieu.The department is supported by a team of Lead Superintendent Radiographers and Superintendent Radiographers and, in return of your commitment to us, we will provide on-going support for your professional development as well as a friendly, challenging and stimulating work environment.

Main duties of the job

The Senior Radiographer will be expected to work in all areas of Hove Polyclinic (HPC) X-ray dept. with one day's rotation to the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH)

The Senior Radiographer will need to be able to undertake a wide range of clinical duties to provide a high-quality imaging service and assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients, encouraging and supporting colleagues to also do so.

Ensure the department delivers an exemplary service and experience to patients and members of the public.

Ensure departmental adherence to Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R) 2017 and Ionising Radiation Regulations (IRR) 2017

Actively participate as a member of the multi-disciplinary team, including the supervision of newly qualified and junior members of staff, assistant practitioners, and student Radiographers

Support the Superintendent Radiographers to ensure the day to day running of the Imaging Department is smoothly co-ordinated.

Act as Radiographer in charge and point of contact for the Hove Polyclinic X-ray department in the Superintendents absence.

Job responsibilities

Have excellent communication skills with patients, carers and comforters and other healthcare professionals.

To be able to convey complex and sensitive information and adapt approach accordingly to service users needs.

To observe and listen to patients and be able to identify changes in their condition through verbal and nonverbal cues.

To ensure all documentation is fully completed and legible.

To handle complaints and plaudits in a professional manner, escalating to a senior member of staff and/or and signposting to relevant services such as PALS as appropriate.

To be able to communicate effectively via verbal, written and electronic routes

Service Delivery and Improvement

Be able to use the full range of radiographic equipment in the department including plain film and theatre.

Work HPC to support the GP walk-in service and clinic patients for plain film and theatre imaging.

Rotate to the RSCH undertaking general plain film duties for GP, inpatients and outpatient clinics

Be competent in the use of digital mobile imaging equipment and perform x-ray examinations on patients that are too unwell or seriously injured to attend the imaging department.

To have good knowledge of exposure factors and equipment settings to be able to adapt examinations and techniques within the capability of the patient and equipment.

Be competent in the use of mobile image intensifiers during operative procedures. To be able to manipulate the equipments positions and settings to optimize imaging dependent upon the requirements of the examination and the surgeon.

To assume leadership duties and coordination of work flow in the busy walk in X-ray service at Hove Polyclinic

To be able to work efficiently and calmly in busy environments.

To maintain expert clinical practice in all areas of practice and support colleagues to do the same, providing and teaching high standards in all imaging techniques undertaken.

To have the knowledge and experience to be able to adapt technique, to know when further imaging or change of protocol is required and provide appropriate advice and guidance to colleagues as appropriate.

Liaise with Advanced Reporting Radiographer Practitioners, Radiology Registrars and Consultant Radiologists (as appropriate) if clinical input is required, ensuring any change in procedure is adequately documented and communicated.

Ensure a safe working environment and adherence to the Employers Procedures, Local Rules, HCPC standards, Health and Safety at Work Act, and local guidance, policies, and procedures.

Understand local escalation procedures for incidents and, if appropriate, report them using online reporting forms (DATIX), to a senior member of staff and/or to equipment service companies.

To continually promote a patient focused service in a caring manner. Be able to communicate information to all patients and carers to minimise radiation doses and maintain excellent patient experience.

People Management and Patient Care Delivery

Be able to work as part of a cohesive multi-disciplinary team.

Be able to identify, plan and organise workload for self and others to maintain an effective patient- focused service.

Have excellent communication, interpersonal and patient care skills. Advise and reassure patients or carers before, during or after examinations, providing sensitive information appropriately.

Follow the Trusts policies in dealing with patient and staff confidentiality and information governance.

Have good IT and problem-solving skills.

Demonstrate knowledge of evidence based best practice and be able to provide advice on the best protocols/techniques to demonstrate anatomy or pathology.

Have knowledge of the Trusts infection control, health, and safety and COSHH procedures policies. Understand the handling of patients with either suspected or confirmed infectious diseases, decontamination procedures, and how to deal with hazardous spillages.

Be able to comment on policies and protocols within the department and implement change if required.

Be able to supervise colleagues as and when required. Support and train student radiographers. Provide teaching to medical students, health care assistants and other disciplines within the Trust. Provide support and advice to junior medical colleagues.

Be able to work under own initiative, to act independently and organise the workload for others with appropriate protocols, procedures, and guidelines. Be aware of clinical and personal limitations and know when to seek appropriate support and guidance.

Departmental Work

Ability to assist/act as the area coordinator, by organizing patient lists in order of priority through effective communication and co-ordination.

To undertake a wide range of clinical duties and maintain a high standard of expertise in the safe operation of all departmental imaging equipment at HPC and RSCH.

To keep up to date with current radiographic practice and provide guidance and advice to colleagues and student Radiographers as appropriate.

Ability to work under own initiative, to act independently and organise the workload for others with appropriate protocols, procedures, and guidelines. Be aware of clinical and personal limitations and know when to seek appropriate support and guidance.

To perform other tasks and duties as deemed reasonable in discussion with the Superintendent Radiographers and Lead Superintendent Radiographers.

Clinical Governance

Have good knowledge of the Trusts policies, including Health and Safety procedures.

Understand change within the Imaging department through cascading, communication, delegation, and leadership.

Report immediately any incident involving staff, patients, members of the public and/or equipment, and complete the relevant paperwork and online incident forms.

Demonstrate an understanding of actions to be taken in the event of an emergency, both in the department and in the event of a major incident.

Be proactive in the discussion and development of ways to improve delivery of service.

To understand the requirements of clinical and research trials and the use of imaging in these.

Contribute to the development of a learning culture within the imaging department.

Assist with the implementation, development and maintenance of Quality Assurance programs and work in accordance with departmental policies, protocols, and procedures.

Assist with monitoring and updating Health and safety records at HPC.

Undertake appropriate quality control measures within the imaging department such as regular audit and quality assurance tests.

Comply with all Trust and Imaging department protocols, procedures and guidelines, radiation safety regulations and professional codes of conduct and ensure that understanding is kept up to date.

Qualifications

Essential

  • BSc in Diagnostic Radiography or equivalent
  • Clinical Radiography experience in an NHS setting.
  • Ability to manipulate large imaging equipment
  • Ability to position patients and apply adaptive techniques.
  • HCPC registration

Desirable

  • Good verbal and written English.
  • Good interpersonal skills with patients, staff, and the public.
  • Evidence of good organisational skills and managing busy workload
  • At least 24 months plain film radiography experience
  • Evidence in image interpretation skills
  • Knowledge of Imaging specific IT systems, i.e., RIS and PACS etc.
