Trust Registrar in Cardiology

East of England, East of England

Fixed-Term

£55,329

Registrar

Job summary

Applications are invited for enthusiastic, motivated and committed individuals to join our friendly and dynamic cardiology team within the Specialist Medicine Division at Colchester Hospital.

Responsibilities will include clinical work within cardiology as detailed below, demonstrating good leadership and providing supervision for junior staff. There will be involvement in regular teaching programme as well as participating in weekly meetings and monthly audit meetings.

The post has generally been regarded as a tremendously helpful 'stepping stone' to a training position either within the highly competitive field of cardiology, or another medical speciality, as there are plenty of cogent learning and developmental opportunities including the chance to write up and publish case reports, reviews and quality improvement projects. Our past registrars have invariably gone on to become highly confident and successful senior doctors.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder's main responsibility will be taking a leading role in managing cardiology inpatients. The cardiology team has a high turnover of acute admissions and patients can be unstable. A cardiology ward round begins every day at 9am, led by either the cardiology consultant of the week (COW), a senior specialty doctor, or a cardiology registrar. After familiarisation with the system, the appointee will be expected to take a supervisory role for junior grades of doctor.

There are multiple education opportunities available within cardiology. Previous appointees have had regular transthoracic rest and stress echocardiography training sessions with senior echocardiographers or consultants. There may be opportunities for developing other interests such as cath lab-based skills (running a cardioversion list, exposure to practical procedures).

The post-holder will take part in at least one cardiology out-patient session per week including new patient referrals from GPs and follow-ups.

There will be an opportunity to join the general medical on call rota.
