Job summary

An opportunity has arisen to work in the plaster room in UHBW, this is fixed term to cover maternity leave full time hours available will consider part time hours.

The successful applicant will need excellent communication skills. The role includes; working with patients in both the outpatient and inpatient settings across the Adult and Children's services at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Bristol Children's Hospital at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust.

In order to undertake this role you must hold the British Orthopaedic Association casting qualification and have registration with the Association of Orthopaedic Practitioners.

You must be able to demonstrate a high level of skill and expertise in casting, splinting and bracing techniques, have an in depth understanding about the care of the patients with plaster casts; orthotic appliances and be fully aware of the complications associated with them.

We are seeking a dynamic, patient centred, hardworking and enthusiastic individual, you should be able to work autonomously with excellent time management, organisational and interpersonal skills.

The candidate should have the motivation to both improve their own skills and work with the team to develop the skills of other team members.

The starting salary will depend on experience and competence in Adult and Children's outpatients theatre and emergency department.

Main duties of the job

  • To be competent in the application, adjustment and removal of all types of casts as prescribed by a clinician.
  • To participate in the assessment, planning and evaluation of care for the patient who is requiring casting or splinting referring to the clinician as required.
  • Assess different initial conditions and provide advice to clinicians on appropriate course of action and materials to be used.
  • Obtains informed consent from patients when carrying out programmes of care.
  • Promptly alerts the nurse in charge of any issues or risks within the clinical setting.
  • To provide expert specialist technical support and advice and a casting service for the Trust, this will cover Fracture and elective clinics, Theatre, Wards and Emergency Departments across adult and children services.
  • To use evidence-based practice to assess, develop and implement care
  • To provide advice on the application of casts for specialist conditions i.e. total contact casting and its wound care for diabetic patients and hip spicas for paediatric patients
  • Instruct clinical staff on the use and application of splints and braces and maintain competency record.

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Qualified Practitioner British Orthopaedic Association Registration with the BOA
  • Work towards relevant university accredited post basic study programmes

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience of Trauma and Orthopaedic casting, functional bracing and musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology
  • Broad knowledge and experience of clinical practice within a hospital environment and specialist clinical and technical knowledge in the application and removal of all types of casting and bracing
  • Significant and relevant experience post qualification
  • Experience of working as a part of a multidisciplinary team covering various departments within adult and children services
  • Experience of teaching

Skills and Abilities

  • Making, adapting and applying specialist braces and to support the provision of Orthotic service
  • To manage wound care in accordance with theoretical and practical elements based on Trust policies and procedures
  • Ability to recognise symptoms relating to threat to life/limb and intervene as necessary
  • In area of specialist practice, assess and make clinical judgements to determine correct intervention and demonstrate competence in clinical skills relevant to clinical area
