Job summary

A rare opportunity to join our Sarum Community Mental Health team has arisen to cover a secondment vacancy for a year. We are looking for an experienced and innovative Occupational Therapist to join our passionate and supportive Occupational Therapy Team in Wiltshire. This would involve supporting working age adults in the community with a variety of mental health diagnoses.

You will need to be a versatile practitioner who is committed to delivering an outstanding service, you will be reflective, articulate and an excellent team worker. You will use a wide range of therapeutic interventions to meet service user's needs and we are particularly keen to attract someone who is confident in delivering occupational therapy standardised and non standardised assessments and interventions with a focus on recovery and optimum levels of functioning.

You will need to demonstrate skills in leadership, supervision and service development. You will be supported in delivering occupational therapy interventions by an OT Assistant. You will also have the clinical support of the Lead Occupational Therapist.

We can offer opportunities for continued professional development, regular supervision including clinical and professional provision.

You will deliver Occupational Therapy service provision with a focus on maintaining persons existing recovery skills and you will support them in meeting their identified recovery needs and goals.

Main duties of the job

To deliver Occupational Therapy process of assessment, intervention and evaluation with reference to the relevant guidelines and legislations and with application to up to date and evidence based practice.

To work as an autonomous Occupational Therapist managing own case load

To provide standardised and non-standardised specialist assessments

To develop, facilitate and monitor community group programme

To work as a key member of the multidisciplinary team attending providing timely feedback.

To delegate and supervise OTA.

To support the service with the prioritisation, planning, development and delivery of a high quality occupational therapy service.

You will be line managed by Lead Occupational Therapist and you will be expected to be an active and involved member of the MDT. You will be offered regular supervision, opportunities for Continued Professional Development and opportunity to contribute to further development of our services.

Job responsibilities

Clinical PracticeTo carry out clinical practice within designated clinical areas ensuring that high quality evidence based occupational therapy assessment, treatment planning, interventions and evaluations for service users are provided.

To complete comprehensive person centredassessments of occupation needs

To develop and Implement appropriate intervention strategies

To evaluate the effectiveness of therapy provided

To implement research based practice.

To work in collaboration with MDT staff

To work within CPA framework and approach

To provide leadership to junior, unqualified staff and students.

To undertake risk assessment and develop risk management strategies for individual service users;

To undertake risk assessment and develop risk managementstrategies for groups and a variety of activities.

To apply clinical reasoning and justification in designing appropriate group programmes and protocols.

To demonstrate working knowledge of the key elements of relevant mental health legislation.

To apply a high level of understanding of the effect of disability and provide training and advice on lifestyle changes and adaptations to the service users social and physical environment.

Education and Health Promotion

To use own skills, knowledge and resources to provide learning opportunities for staff and promote positive attitudes towards mental health, this will include:-

To be responsible for the supervision and written assessment of OTstudents on practice placement within the Trust.

To support the provision of an appropriate learning environment for students novice practitioners and new team members as directed.

Continuing Professional Development Objective

To maintain and develop professional knowledge skills and expertise to ensure that therapy reflects best practice remains evidence based, is current and responsive to meet changing service user and NHS needs to include:

To abide by the Code of Ethics and professional conduct for OccupationalTherapists and HCPC standards.

To take responsibility for post registration education and for continuingprofessional development as outlined in HCPC standards.

To receive clinical/professional supervision in accordance with Trustsupervision policy.

Service Overview and Planning

To contribute to the development and planning of services specific to the posts designated areas. This will include:

Contribute to the planning and development of clinical services, includingthe review of team establishments, grade mix and skill mix and to beactively involved in the recruitment, selection and interviewing process.

To follow the Trust and Service Policies relating to the security of the building/clients, to ensure safe practice and protection of clients, staff, visitors and members of the general public, this will include:

To play a part in the service provision that is both safe and therapeutic within span of knowledge.

To coordinate the day-to-day activities of junior staff and students whereapplicable.

To be responsible for maintaining resources and delivering a service withinfinancial constraints.

To provide people management function to identify staff for the designated areas, including the development and implementation of regular appraisal and performance management systems.

To maintain accurate records.

Record Keeping and Administration

To maintain high standards of record keeping and associated administration in accordance with AWP Trust Policy and local joint arrangements and professional guidelines, this will include:

The upkeep of contemporaneous, chronological and accurate mental health records in accordance with relevant COT Guidelines and Trust Policy.

To ensure timely recording of all data required by the Trust

Practice Development and Clinical Audit

To contribute to practice development activity and evidenced based mental health occupational therapy this will include:

To take part in Trust LDU audits as required.

To broaden research and development skills through participation inlocal/trust/national audit and research projects.

To form professional relationships with clients and communicate with them in a way that respects their views, autonomy and culture.

Essential

  • Registration: HCPC registered
  • Knowledge: Knowledge of OT models of practice
  • Experience: Extensive post registration experience including within mental health
  • Clinical Reasoning: Detailed knowledge of mental health legislation and current practice
  • Written Skills: Application content, organisation, relevance to post

Desirable

  • Experience using ACLS 6
  • Experience working in community mental health setting
  • Experience planning and running group interventions
